Would you play Chess in your car?

We often play chess in our laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc. I was wondering how many of you would be interested to play chess when travelling/driving in a car.

This has some difficulties as the person is driving the car, and can make moves only when at traffic signal, low speeds, etc. The limitation is that the person cannot move his hands away from the steering wheel. This limitation can be overcome by using voice based commands, as is easily available in most modern cars. Example, "Knight to C3". The on-board car computer plays his moves, or connects to www.chess.com with the player's move, and speaks out the computer's next move, like "Pawn to D4". The onboard screen also shows the current game screenshot for the newly initiated.

If such feature is implemented, I want to survey about your opinions, likes/dislikes, about such feature. And, do you think this would be successful feature (must have/ nice to have)? Please provide more inputs to improve this feature in the car. Thanks.

I do play chess in the car, i thought everyone did, especially when u need a break from concentrating on the road.

Look every 5 secs to the front and she's all good : )

If you are the driver--you should not play chess in your car as it is too distracting and might cause an accident and even death of another person.

However, if you are not the driver--that is a different story.

CuzinVinny

This is retarded, please stop.

We have enough bad drivers on the road, we dont need people distracted with a difficult position in a situation where they cant think to actually play.

And no, 99.999% of the world does not deem it a "must have".

I did not intend to play Live Chess or Blitz in car. The above feature is for Online Chess or other forms without any hard time constraints.

Perhaps, normal drivers wouldn't like it, but it would be a great tool for blindfold chess players on a long long ride to their nest.

You would agree that most drivers face lot of other distractions also like music, conversations, phone calls, etc. The driver need not have a visual contact to the chess screen at all times. The only way in which this feature would interrupt you is just an announcement "Checkmate!"

Only reason I bought my car, cause it had chess built in as an extra.

Good for your brain, play and drive, it's incredible : )

Great George1st!! you have got a phenomenal and rare car. My car still doesn't have this feature, and I am planning to develop one myself into it's infotainment system.

OK, I don't bring personal stuff into forums at all. But I'm going to make an exception today.

My son was killed four years ago by a distracted driver. I don't know what she was doing--talking on the phone, tuning her radio, rifling through the glove compartment--but she was doing SOMETHING when she sailed across two lanes of traffic and ended his life.

Whether you think this thread was funny, ironic, or--God help us--serious, it is really nothing more than idiotic and offensive. Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road. Period.

It's a delicate balance between life and death which involves every driver on the road. However, with advances in technology and safety devices, and computer's overtaking the driver's role, why not do something new, something innovative?

PS: Also think about long distance road-trucker's whose livelyhood depends on driving alone.

Cell phones have been banned in some places.

The problem isn't exactly visual. The driver's mind would be distracted, causing a mental impairment. Being mentally impaired means a person has less time to see and react to a possible problem.

@Msteen - Sorry for your loss.

While it may be fun for the driver to also be able to play chess. That driver is not only risking his own life but he is risking the lifes of others.

I knew someone who was talking on the phone and driving down the road and when she got to her house just automatically turned to her house and was hit by another car and died.  It is just too risky and you risk the lifes of other people to play chess while driving. And I know it would be tempting to do this.

This is a really BAD idea. Contrary to all the BS put out by cell phone mfrs "hands free" phones are still a major, dangerous distraction when one is driving. All phone calls should be banned for anyone driving and so should chess (just say no, let's not have to pass more unenforcable laws than we already have) Of course I'm making the assumption that playing chess and driving is at least as distracting as yakking away on a phone.

I'm pretty sure all car insurance companies are opposed to "hands free" phones, texting, using a PC, etc while driving because they end up paying for people's stupidity sooner or later. And I'm sure they'll hate your idea too, since chess is only the tip of the games iceberg for distracting thoughtless drivers.

Here's a tiny fraction of evidence to support my claims:

Driving is a hardcore blitz game that demands immediate attention at all times and thinking about your next move of the car. This is your life, not a game. Any distractions or hard thinking away from the road can get you killed.

Anyone thinking differently has the brain of a toothpick.

You should give serious thought to brain transplant ....maybe that peanut can be replaced w/ something that works.

Maybe this belongs on the 'bad chess joke' forum.

I think maybe it does. I had started thinking maybe the OP had watched a few too many Simpsons episodes. The comment reminded me of the truck driving episode which had the truck drive itself while Homer relaxed on the hood.

Dutchday

I don't prefer it, since it makes me sick easily.

It should not be done at all when driving, since this can be dangerous. Even a blindfold game distracts a lot.

CapAnson

Already done my man.  Watch out if I'm on the road near you, cause I'm making my move.
