As you said, there are already Xiangqi sites.
For chess.com it would demand a lot of work to introduce such a different game, and the result would be probably something inferior to what already exists in sites specialyzed in this.
Even some Chess variants that are very close to chess were not introduced, like Seirawan Chess (that only has two extra pieces and has basically the same rules)
Fischer's Random was easily introduced because it has exactly the same pieces and only some different rules about initial position and castling.
Xiangqi (or Chinese Chess) is a great game very similar to international chess. At the moment it is possible to play live Xiangqi at clubxiangqi.com.
It would be great if chess.com could host Xiangqi games in the turn-based format. No one is currently doing this.
Playing Xiangqi helps encourage tactical thinking, and it will certainly improve a person's overall chess performance.
