y can the king move only one step ?

In an endgame with little material left on the board, I don't think many people would argue that the king is often the strongest piece, even if it can only move one space.

If you would like a practical demonstration as to why the king should not move more than one space, please come over and play against my 4 year old son (or go find a 4 year old of your own).  He likes to move the king (and the pawns) as many spaces and in whatever direction he feels like, and while it is very entertaining to watch, it is not enjoyable to play, even if you follow his rules.

Who says that a game of chess must be played with the king's conventional movement restrictions? If you want to use a variant rule that makes the king more powerful, then find an opponent who would be willing to play a variant of chess.

For a long list of interesting variants for chess, search for "chess variant" on Wikipedia.org (or just follow the link below).

It's possible, just difficult. After all, you can take an opponent's queen by force.

Bishop moves diagonal.

When other pieces are alive, king needs not to go more than one step. Because all other pieces work to protect him.

When all other pieces are lost, king losses his strength to move more than one step.

maybe if the powerful king didn't have the move of the knight, maybe you could use the fool's mate... lolTongue out

It's a legitimate question, stop being critical of the OP.
The Queen wasn't powerful until some peasants decided to model the queen in chess off of Queen Isabella....
As for the king, I don't have a real answer for you, I can only speculate.

I don't consider it a silly question at all.  The king is a very powerful piece because like the queen it can attack all the surrounding squares.  While it is in the castle it is the strongest defensive piece around.

Were he able to move more than one space in any direction we would have to take the king out entirely and replace him with another queen.

As the piece that is the center of the game, meaning one misstep and it's over, it is in the best interest of players to keep him out of harm's way.

thank u for not consigering a silly q. . i too dont think that it is a silly q. it is something to think abt.

This business of a queen move combined with a knight is an old one. I played Maharajah chess over 30 years ago. I'm sure it wasn't new then either. Anyway, for those of you with an interest:

In the beginning, the King was a powerful piece. The Queen (then the Vizier, or Minister) could only move one square diagonally at a time. The bishops could only move two squares diagonally, making them weaker than knights. So all the pieces had very limited ranges except the rook, making the rooks the most powerful pieces on the board. In such an environment, the King's ability to move one square in any direction made it stronger than a Queen or a bishop, and very nearly equal to a knight in piece-power.

But, wouldn't it be intersting if the king could move the way the queen. I guess there would be a lot of draws.

the king only moves one step because it has to be able to stopted(aka=check mate).
Unbeliever
Because it would be impossible to checkmate a King that had the movement range of a Queen.

The king would be a pretty strong piece if he wasn't hunted down all the time.  If you do not like the fact that kings can only move one space, just play a variation of chess where the king can move however you want him to.
