Young Chess Players

I, Samuel -------, am 13. Tomorrow, I will be 14. I guess that justifies this topic as a fitting one. Are there others out there alike to me? On my live chess rating, I am into the 1100s, so I am not a player who simply goes on to Chess.com every month or so when my Xbox breaks down (I actually don't have one) or my Mom lays restrictions on video game time. Where are those alike to me? I feel like an oddball amidst my perfectly normal friends who don't even know how to castle, least of all what an en passant is. Anyone?

this could be normal.. I'm 22 and feel the same way haha

You may be able to find some on Chesskid.com

Lots of kids play chess, even if your friends don't play very well ;)  Some kids are ridiculously good too.  You could see if your state has any kind of scholastic chess program set up.  They would hold tournaments for players your age for example.  That way you could meet kids your age who share a real interest for chess.

Oh, your profile says you live in CA.  Well, there's definitely lots of chess there.  You could start here: http://www.chessinsandiego.com/

I'm 24 an some of my friends say they like playing chess. Then we do and I castle and they say you can't do that. Or I capture en passant and they think I am making stuff up. I'm right there with you my friend, but you are much younger than I. Keep it up and you'll be 2000+ by the time your 20!

With all due humbleness, that would be little elementary. I am into the 1100s, as I mentioned.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think you might be surprised how many young players are "into the 1100's." Wouldn't hurt to check out a club. I'm sure youll make some new friends and even meet some very strong players to practice with, in turn, becoming a stronger player.

If you live near San Francisco or LA, you'll find plenty of players your age or younger at 1100 or higher ratings at scholastic events.  Heck there are a bunch of players under 10 years of age with 1100+ ratings in California.

Ah...I see you're in San Diego.  There isn't a huge scholastic chess community there but there are definitely juniors your age and younger at your current level and higher.

Exactly! 1100s is average standard. For anyone with reasonable capacity to learn that is quickly achievable. Learn a couple of asymmetric openings and how to fork and you'll be 1500+ soon enough

I think you forgot to mention watch your opponents threats and not hang pieces as well. This seems to be a problem for me sometimes. haha. I'm working on it though!
