the last game is funny I reckon
Your favorite scenes from "Searching for Bobby Fischer"?

Awesome, I haven't seen the movie in forever, so I barely remember anything! I need to watch it again.

Don't remember the third scene, but here are mine:
- same as your first one
- Where Bruce sweeps the chess pieces off the board to teach Josh to visualize.
- Where Josh promotes the pawn and skewers his rival's king and queen in that final tournament.

He gets a framed GM certificate in the movie? Are you sure about that, because Josh never made GM.
I don't remember it being framed, but yes.

Isn't the certificate framed as in fake? I mean, the guy throws certificate after certificate at him, to learn him that it's not a piece of paper or a title that is important in chess.

Oh, a fake certificate. I see. Haven't watched that movie for a very long time and don't remember that scene.
P.S., Wilbert_78, you mean "to teach him". To learn means to 'acquire knowledge or skills' for oneself, whereas to teach is the act of conveying knowledge or skills to others (or to oneself).

Ah you are right, thanks for pointing that out. In Dutch teach and learn can both be filled in with the word 'leren'.

I liked where he was finally allowed to play his friend from the park again.
It inspired him, because that was the type of chess he really loved to play.
I also liked where he offered the champ a draw, in a winning position.
I also liked where Bruce gave him the GM certificate. It made my eyes water, great movie.

Love this movie.
My favorite scene is the one where we see little Josh become captivated with chess while it starts to rain, watching the hustlers in NYC park. We're left wondering whether he took the baseball or the knight home as a keepsake. The secret is revealed to us when we see Morpheus all alone in the park tossing the ball to himself in the rain. And a wide-eyed Josh fingering the knight in his blanket fort, mesmerized by its form and power.
It's always amazing witnessing the beginnings of something beautiful.

Not quite. It's not a "GM" certificate. It's not for becoming a GM or for anything associated with GM. It just says "Master Chess Certificate - For Highest Achievement" on it. It was just recognition for earning a bunch of "master class points."
This clip shows a closeup of the certificate:

No, you are mistaken. Notice I said "FRAMED" certificate? There are TWO certificates in the move. One was a cheap photocopy which you describe which Josh never received.
The FRAMED certificate says "This is to certify that Josh Waitskin has, in the eyes of his teacher, attained the rank of Grandmaster."
Obviously JW was never a GM in real life.

Here is a clip of the FRAMED certificate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v8C1H99O_s

i guess this was the scene:

and then there was "searching bobby fischer" ...
At 43 seconds into that clip you can see the REAL Josh and Vinnie playing at the board behind the actors. That clip also shows a blooper in the film. Josh describes his opening as the "Schliemann Attack" (pawn to f5) and it is not.
What are your favorite scenes from "Searching for Bobby Fischer"? I have three.
* First the one where Josh and his Dad approach Vinnie after Josh's vacation from chess and Josh asks "wanna play?" Their battle is epic but very positive with the REAL Vinnie and Josh playing at the next table behind them.
* Where Bruce gives Josh the framed GM certificate, says he is proud of him and is honored to call himself Josh's teacher.
* The state finals were Josh's younger sister obviously asks (you cannot hear her) Vinnie what's in his thermos, he replies "water", takes a pull on it and his facial expression says it's something else and when she holds out her hands to take the thermos he very nicely says "no."
