0-point bye for Rapid Tournaments

Every time I try to join a 15|0 Rapid (<1199) Tournament, I receive a 0-point bye for the first round even though I'm clearly online. I've joined at various times, from 5 minutes before to 5 seconds before the first round starts, yet no matter what I'm detected as "offline" and not matched for the tournament.

Maybe try joining an do a refresh within a minute of the start.

Same thing happens to me: I tried to join tournaments 4 times. Online, ready to play, watching the countdown, and when it hits 0, I'm "detected as offline" and get the 0-point bye. Refreshing 10 seconds before the start does not help. So what's the trick to play tournaments here?

Yeah, I saw it again just last night. 0 point bye the first game. It's like the third time it's happened to me, and it says that it will pair you in the next round, but it just gives you another bye. I haven't been able to play in a tourney all week.

same issue to me evil.png

PS: Yeah, refreshed browser site every minute, but does not help... sad.png
5 minutes later, I am even logged out???
I use LinuxMint, Firefox, NoScript-Add-On but with almost all permissions...

Have you tried it when disabling that add-on? The site uses other domains too so if you're just allowing chess.com you're missing scripts.

RachelsSong

Thx for your quick reply.
Yes, I will give it another try and disable my add-on. Or try Chromium Browser, or Opera... (have no add-ons installed in them)
I'll keep you posted.

Was the issue above ever resolved? What's the answer?

Until now, I didn't try to enter a Swiss Tournament again. In my case, I wanted to play tournaments with longer time control (Rapid Swiss 30|0, 4 rounds), and that meant I had to do a lot of preparation for being ready to play up to 4 hours and I had to get this time frame, too,  which is not easy for me. For a while, I was not in the mood to do this prep again and to risk being thrown out another time and having prepped extensively in vain.
Maybe someone else comes up with good news and reports a successful try.

Just to follow up, if anyone is interested: My case involved a player who turned out to be using an iPad and the chess.com app. I suggested they go through a browser such as Chrome or Firefox rather than the app. They started using Chrome, and it has worked (so far).

If this issue has been discovered in 2020, then why the management still didn't address this one?

It appears to only impact some members and likely comes down to a client issue.

Well, I was online and ready for my third round today when, instead of starting the game, Chess.com gave me a 0 point bye. Rapid 30|0 four rounds. I was literally watching the screen and I was not offline. I'm using Chrome on a MacBook Pro and I never have connection problems when playing online. If it is a bug it happens only during specific forms of tournament and I don't think that it is client-side.

If the live server process doesn't see a connection to your client, it won't pair you. It's possible for the client not to see a connection issue and the server not actually see a connection.

The problem is that we client-side can do nothing if the "You are disconnected" white square doesn't appear in the lower right. Maybe they should try more "handshakes" before deciding that someone is not connected (just an idea, I'm not a technician). Being ready to play only to get a bad surprise in a tourney is not what I expect from Chess.com - and many players are reporting this problem (to the support email too).

Same thing keeps happening to me on chrome for windows. Sitting there with the browser open, ready to play and boom, 0-point bye. Very frustrating because it just immediately guarantees you can't win the tournament

Might be worth refreshing a minute before the event starts.

This is happening to me too. It's wasting a lot of people's precious time!

mweeksdev

This happens every time I join a tournament with longer time limits as well, from chrome.
