502 Server Error

Why are games interrupted due to 502 errors still counted as a loss (or win) for the players. Can't they be just cancelled without penalty?

I think it's pretty infrequent. There was a thread about a 502 problem last July. @JDCannon looked into it.

502 Bad Gateway error is often a network error between servers on the internet, meaning the problem wouldn't be with your computer or internet connection. Empty or incomplete headers or response body typically caused by broken connections or server side crash can cause 502 errors if accessed via a gateway or proxy. Since it's just a generic error, it doesn't actually tell you the website's exact issue.

How to Solve 502 Errors

  • Perform a hard-refresh in your browser. On Macs, this is done by pressing Cmd + Shift + R.
  • Clear your browser cache and delete cookies. Your browser may be holding on to certain files that were saved once you visited the website with a 502 error.
  • Change your DNS servers. If you’ve never changed them in the past you likely still have the default servers assigned to you by your ISP, try using open DNS servers such as Google's Public DNS.
  • Finally, restart your computer/networking equipment. Some temporary issues with your computer and how it's connecting to your network could be causing 502 errors, especially if you're seeing the error on more than one website. In these cases, a restart would help.

pretty infrequent != not important. I just got it now. They should look into it again.

For me, the entire site is giving 502 errors today (even trying to come to this forum to find this thread). (EDIT: and got another 502 when trying to publish this comment.)

I've never gotten this error before, and I can't complete a game today. Seems like a problem with Chess.com, tbh.

marciorossato

same problem here, almos week I lost a game because of this.

justbefair

Theory is that it's connected to Puzzle Week.

I just lost game due to 502 errors and im getting them all accross the site. I have tried clearing cache and re-logging and its still happening.

tylerjakob

Wait I had to follow up, because actually it seems like it didn't count that game. Its not in my archive.

CrackersKiller

Same thing happened to me at the same time as you.. I was winning my game, I was in the endgame up a piece with enough time remaining and then 502 error -__-"

Ron2969

Go lichess, at least until they fix whatever the problem is

Alpengreis1

Many 502 currently here too ...

BashirovKemal

The same problem. I don't what to do...

Alpengreis1

I reported it too via Feedback, IF it's a problem on their side hopefully they will fix it soon!

I just lost a game literally because of that 502 error, this site is no longer viable. And for all the people who are like "they're working on it." They've been working on it for days now, and guess what, nothing has changed for the better, if anything, it's gotten much MUCH worse.

levth21

it's literally difficult to finish one game, the connection goes down all the time...
