Anyone know why Discover Card isn't accepted?

I'm not a big fan of autorenewal so I choose instead to pay for my Diamond on a year to year basis.  About a week ago I tried using my Discover Card and received this message:

Unfortunately Maestro Cards are not supported for recurring payments. Please use another credit card.

I know, WT# is a Maestro card?  I looked it up and it's a debit only card from Mastercard.  So I asked Billing for clarification and after a few days received a reply that my card should work, and a cheery "Have a nice day".  Not helpful.

So I decide it must be a bug and sent in a bug report.  No response so far.

Of course I have other credit cards and will eventually use one of them, but I'd still like to know what's going on.

Oh, sorry about the red ink.  My "copy and paste" message was in red, and then so was the rest of my post.

My card always worked in the past. It's possible that Discover blocked the charge, unless the site's payment processor stopped accepting it.

Thanks for the reply, Martin.  It's not on Discover's end; the message about not accepting Maestro popped up before I had even completed entering my numbers.  You would think Billing would know what cards are and aren't accepted.  I'd go ahead and renew with another card, but I'm curious to see if I get an official response and explanation.  I'm not holding my breath...

And as long as we're "copy/pasting", here's the Billing response...

Hello baddogno. We should be able to accept the card type that you mention. You should be able to go to https://www.chess.com/membership to upgrade to a premium membership on Chess.com. Thank you and have a nice day!

So I contacted Support again and they came back with the usual generic solutions.  Make sure none of my Chrome extensions are enabled (only 2 and they weren't enabled).  Clear your cache, along with a very nice explanation of why that's periodically necessary (first thing I tried).  Still, I went ahead and did it again.  Same Maestro card nonsense.  In fact it pops up as soon as I type in the first 4 numbers.

Oh well, nothing lasts forever I suppose.  While I had always planned to eventually renew using another card, this experience has annoyed me enough that now I don't think I'll bother.

A lot of companies dont accept discover because of their high fees for charging their customers. Have your tried a different card?

Support should probably run it up the chain. I just looked and Meastro cards have different starting numbers. Either the error message is wrong, or the code checking for valid numbers is wrong.

Thanks for your input.  I'm quite certain that another card would work, but I would really like to figure out why I get the Maestro card message.  Perhaps I'm being naive here, but I really thought that Billing would appreciate knowing that a card that they say should work, doesn't.

@Martin_ Stahl:

Thanks again Martin.  That's pretty much my take on it too.  Support has been quite polite about my problem, but it seems the solution lies with someone else.  I really miss the tactics trainer; oops, puzzles, and despite my earlier bravado, will probably eventually just give up and use another card.

And Support has just gifted me a month of Diamond while they try and figure this out...

And in the latest development....

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/chess-com-giveth-and-chess-com-taketh-away

I guess the site has grown so large, so quickly, that it has become almost unmanageable.  The left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing.  Can't wait for the next act of this farce...

So I got this from billing yesterday telling me my card should work now and for further problems I should contact Discover and ask them why they are declining my transaction.  I happily punched in the first 4 digits of my card and was rewarded with the same old "We don't take Maestro card" message.  Hmmm...

Hello there. I am happy to help you with this billing and membership concern. I have now made it so that you should be able to go to https://www.chess.com/membership to resubscribe for a premium membership on Chess.com. We should be accepting Discover cards. If you encounter any further problems I would recommend that you contact your bank or credit card company to ask why your payment details have been declined. Thank you and have a nice day!

Hey, I hit up a staff member and they are following up on it. I even tried gifting a one-month membership with a Discover card and it gave me the Maestro error as well.

baddogno

Thanks Martin.  Glad to see confirmation.  All I really want is for them to admit there is a problem and to stop giving me the runaround.

Martin_Stahl

Yeah, at a minimum, a validation error crept into the code, or the logic that is being used has the incorrect values

And now Billing wants me to go through a special account they have set up at PayPal.  I politely declined their kind offer and pointed out that I could have used another card weeks ago if membership was the issue.  The issue is that something is broken with the way they handle Discover Card and I want them to either fix it or at least admit there is a problem.  And the reason I have diamond again?  A fellow member who prefers to remain anonymous gifted me a month for which I am of course quite grateful.

Martin_Stahl

I guess it possible that the payment processor stopped taking Discover, but when I contacted a staff member, he had a developer looking at it. I haven't heard anything else at this point.

baddogno

Thanks for the update Martin.  It is much appreciated.

They only accept discovered checks here. 🤣

Quite clever, Morphy, quite clever indeed...wink.png

And there is progress to report.  The issue has finally been forwarded to the payment programmers.  I don't necessarily expect swift resolution, but at least the right people are now looking at it.
