App is trying to search my network

My iphone warned me that the chess.com app wanted to connect to other devices on my network.

Why is the app trying to do that?
GhostBird
Hell no. Not unless I understand why, and know the app isn’t being used as a hacker tool.

You sigh all you want. You have no clue.

Forums are mostly answered by other members.

You could open a ticket with support to ask.

I think I’ve figured it out - I think the app request came after a game where I played particularly well, including a “brilliant” move and approximate rating some 600 points higher than my actual. My guess is that the app was looking for a cheater chess engine on my network.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen.

I’m pretty sure that it is one of multiple automated methods being used.

It's pretty much impossible with a network scan to determine what is running on a different device, without getting full access to those devices. As I said, I'm pretty sure that's not happening with the app.

An app that is allowed to scan other devices on a network can identify what internet sites those devices are connecting to. That is the main prpose of such a request. From Apple support:

“Apps that access your local network can collect information about nearby devices in order to determine which networks you join and when. This information could be used to create a profile of you.”

So the chess.com phone app can identify chess engine sites being used by other devices on my network. It is pretty clear to me that is part of the cheat prevention.

Why are you trying so hard, giving false information, on something you clearly don’t understand?

An app could get IP data potentially from your network, but the way networks actually work, it would only be able to see broadcast traffic that makes it to your device, since any other traffic would not be routed to your device.

I'm providing information based on experience and how networking traffic works. Again, I'm pretty sure that's not being done, but if you think it is, then I guess that's all there is ... happy

Yep, you’re wrong. And that’s all there is.

Apps coming from the Apple App Store on iOS (which is the only way to get apps as of now,) are strictly limited to the app itself. This is why Anti-Virus apps do not work as they can't scan anything outside of themselves.
