Best Chess Apps?

Sort:

Just wanted to find out what people thought were the best chess apps for iPad/iPhone. I use tChess Pro, but are there other apps that may offer a more accurate estimated rating?

Thanks in advance.

in terms of accuracy of ratings, I dont' know of anything better.  I personally used to use chesspro, and I use playmagnus for some fun quick game practice. I've noticed in chesspro that sometimes a simple tactical trick could beat an estimated 2000 USCF elo :P  hope that helps and sorry I don't have any great suggestions

Thanks for your help, I will look into the ones you mentioned.

Stockfish is very good. Small fish as well. I think it can go up to 3000 elo.

The Shredder chess app gives you a rating and adjusts the difficulty level accordingly (playing against the computer). Shredder gives you a graph of your ratings history which is quite handy to see the progress or otherwise. I also use the Social Chess app to play with other people and this also gives you an ELO rating. But the weird thing is, my rating is different between the two apps so I don't know which one is more accurate.

To the OP, at your novice level I don't think "the best" (whatever that means) is the best answer for you.

Saying that, I would recommend "Chessmaster" Grandmaster Edition (or even 11th, 10th...any of them) are a wonderful application. Tutorials, game play against various level players with varying styles, GM databases, extremely user friendly, great graphics.

"At my novice level". Thanks for your help, GM!

Don't get snarky with me. You either are a novice or if not, you play like one. I gave you really good advice. Now I regret it. Take this, instead: Tongue Out

Some of the most popular posts on my chess blog are reviews of apps for iOS devices. This discussion of tactics training apps is typical: http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2013/02/chess-tactics-training-on-ipad.html.

I really like chess pro with coach.

Pricey bought it on a whim cuz someone had given me an iTunes gift card. Literally use it every day and I really like being able to use it to read through books. Can go through variations and jump right back to the point you varied with one click

Shredder is more accurate. Social Chess is the Words with Friends of the Scrabble world.

Thank you, I shall try both.

I agree, Chess Pro with coach is great, but does anyone know how to load a pgn file from Chess, com into Chess Pro. It gives the option of loading it into other applications such as SmallFish, but not Chess Pro., which is a great program for analysing games.

If you guys give this computer the rating of 3000 then you truly dont know anything about chess. This computer is 2400. And i defeated it uncountable times.

I can recommend Max Chess. It's very good for beginners. It has very simple interface and few game modes:
1. In section "Rules of chess" you can play chess against very weak opponent and using unlimited hints from your virtual coach.
2. In section "Play vs computer" first levels are very easy.
3. In section "Solve puzzles" you can choose "Easy" puzzles. Most of them is one move puzzles.
4. In section "Practice" there are many chess endgames for beginners: checkmate using two rooks, checkmate using one queen and etc.
