Best win records

My concern is that my "best win" was actually only a win by time out. The  player would have demolished my game. This cant be the right way to record best wins as it is actually misleading.Another of my time out "wins" had a checkmate on his move!!!

I guess the rating calculators should be updated.  The final position should be taken into account.  If you gained 100 points, e.g., will you be willing to gain only 1 point or even no points when the programmers change the scripts?

The  player would have demolished my game.

Are we looking at the same game (knightlord, 1447)? You were threatening his queen and mate... perhaps he let time run out because there was no saving move.

thats the game;I judged him a better player than me andwould move pawn  c5 to capture d4 and put me in trouble

Ithink system should be changed  a win on time out is not completed game
TWE
Then the obvious problem would be that people who felt that they were in a disadvantaged position would just let their time run out. It simply would not work.

That is true of course but surely the programmer could distinguish between score on best completed game and score on time-out game?

In an over-the-board game, a loss on time because you couldn't find a saving move, a resignation, and a checkmate are counted the same.

After cxd5 Qd8+ and Black loses his queen! But if I were Black I might have played it out a couple more moves to make sure my opponent spotted that.

Some folk think slowness to resign is a fault; not knowing the game rules too well I could not tell if there are points advantages in carrying on to the wearying and embittering(in some idividuals!) end. DOES resignqation give the same score as checkmate for example?

A loss (by checkmate) is a loss (by resignation) is a loss (on time)... they're all scored the same. Everyone is different, but if I were Black in the above position I would play on until White won my queen. At that point I would probably resign unless we were in time trouble or my opponent was much lower-rated.

Thanks to everyone for comment. In summary , while open board rules  are needed to govern our chess play, we are not playing  at refereed open board occasions; we can even go on vacation for a month plus the agreed playing time for example and THEN still time out! For me it is not a question of what points should or should not be  awarded, but simply that the particular result should not be shown in scores as BEST WINS  when clearly  they are not--they are        " games abandoned"  and the  un observed computer board  game should have  different conditions from  observed open board play taken in to account.Otherwise the score shown can be completely miss leading if no codicil is attached to it in explanation. I would be surprised if the programmers could not solve this

no resignation cant give same point as that of check mate because resignation means one can not cotinue, that means he will not be awarded any point.

Rubbish. Take up draughts.

I THOUGHT IT WAS OBVIOUS that BOTH contestants  received new point totals and I was not referring solely to my own scores. Hope you can see argument better now. So why have you disregarded  misleading best win readings in favour of mxd. up unnecessary and ignorant  (of the true exposition at least) rudeness. What do u think  of playing a game with me in which I would undoubtedly come off worst to your superior  intellect; but u could sportingly  lose by time out in order to observe points results for both parties  ---up for it ?
greyfox
i thought best win record is the game youve beaten the highest rating opponent. its noit about how youve won but whom youve beaten.
chancer789456
Any way thanks again to all contributors and no offence meant, really, it is only a game. However it is high time organisers contributed--are u listening out there?!?
chancer789456
Have now to apologise abjectly for my addled brain rubbish., not having read the blogs properly, missed the mark a bit and  myself trotted out the kind of comment I was offended by.Nevertheless I must stand by my comment on scoring statistics.

a win on time is a win. and it is impossible to distinguish between a timeout caused by a true inability to get to the game and a timeout based on somebody just never coming back because they were going to lose. it would take manual revision of the games, and with thousands of games ending every day that is impossible :)
chancer789456

Why could not there be penalty points deductions for ALL time outs  - discouraging  malingers and stopping  unfair results.True inability to get to game would be comparitively rare and would have to be taken philosophically like accidentally hitting wrong key, throwing away your key pieces by brainstorm or finding you had forgotten to set the alarm  to awake or falling off a ladder etc. ! Would that not be preferable to the chess community in place of endless  waiting and checking for a move that is not going to be made? Surely !

Patzer24
Well penalty points could really mess up the rating system and the accuracy of the ratings. So that idea is surely a double-edged sword.
