I made brilliant moves in 2 recent games. Very exciting for a beginner! Earlier today I found the insights tool but it says I have made 0 brilliant moves in all my games, whyyyyyy. sad.png

Yes,  "Brilliant" moves, as they are currently defined, aren't really brilliant.  They are just sacrifices deemed appropriate for your rating level.

Chess.com is always working to improve and last year they changed the definition of what gets called "brilliant".  The older definition resulted in only a very few often obscure moves being called "brilliant."

Brilliant (!!) moves and Great Moves are always the best or nearly best move in the position, but are also special in some way. We replaced the old Brilliant algorithm with a simpler definition: a Brilliant move is when you find a good piece sacrifice. There are some other conditions, like you should not be in a bad position after a Brilliant move and you should not be completely winning even if you had not found the move. Also, we are more generous in defining a piece sacrifice for newer players, compared with those who are higher rated.

The new definition calls every little halfway decent sacrifice "brilliant."

They need to keep working on it.

Meanwhile, your "brilliant" moves were very nice.

Insights runs at it's own depth, which may not match the depth of the game Review where you got those brilliants, so it's possible to have differences between the two.

Thank you for the explanation! It makes a lot of sense that review page is more generous for newbies, since looking bad my moves are nothing special xD. I got another brilliant move after this post and it was just a very normal and capture when I already had a big advantage lol.

I think you are right. So I take it that insights page give you credit for 'objectively brilliant' moves, but the review page adjusts everything based on rating.

Insights definitely runs at a larger depth than the standard 20 done at game review. I reviewed a game at 20 depth and it said I had a brilliant queen move. When increased to 26 depth the engine changed it to a good move. This seemed more in tone with my feelings on the game as I had played rather poorly. Here is the game but be aware I am low 700 player at best.

I don't believe Insights uses a high depth. I know it's not 26

I have had your problem but instead I was given a brilliant move by chess insights but not by the game review (meaning I don't even know which game it was in). Does anyone know why this might be happening?

justbefair

You can use the date range on Insights to narrow down when you played the move.

Thanks I found the game with the brilliant move
