Chat disabled mid-game

Once in a while, in the middle of a game (typically when it is my opponent’s turn to move) the chat icon will change from the normal icon to the “chat disabled” icon (X over the chat bubble). This usually occurs when an opponent is abandoning the game without forfeiting. However, it has happened a number of times randomly in the middle of a match where no messages have been sent, and my opponent plays through until the end of the game. Does this happen to anyone else? What does it mean?

I don't know, but I feel you. One time I shared an inside joke with a friend on chess.com, and apparently the server took it as some sort of insult and muted my account for three days. Don't worry, there's probably something on google that can help. Or type your problem into the "help" icon at the bottom left of your screen.
