Checkmate declared as stalemate

Hi,
I was just after playing a game which i was just about to win and the game was declared a stalemate. Here's the id: http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=394671786

It was black's move and he was in checkmate. I'm confused. Anyone had this happen to them before?

Checkmate is a term used to describe a king being unable to move whilst also being in check. Stalemate is a term used to describe a king being unable to move whilst not being in check. In the game provided, white is not attacking black's king, and thus the game results in stalemate.

How did you get to 1129?

heinzie

Definitely a bug

That IS NOT checkmate. Black's king is not in check.

The game is stalemate because black had no legal moves.

DrSpudnik

The "check" is what makes it "check-mate"

When it's stale, it's just "stale-mate."

Simek77

That isn't checkmate. Black wasn't in check. Checkmate is when king is in check and has nowhere to move. Stalemate is when the side on the move has no legal move to play.

You're right to say that you had a winning position here johnnyf_03 but it's not enough just to advance one or more of your pawns, you also have to guard against stalemating your opponent. After all, a draw is exactly the result he's trying to get !

Just chalk this up as a lesson learned (?)

Pawns have allegedly vanished from the board tooSurprised, read about this on another Help and Support thread, probably a bug,

Thanks everyone. Yes i'll just have to chalk this down as a lesson learned

You learn this lesson the hard way... turning a winning game into a draw

King & pawn versus King endgames crop up time & again & are well worth studying (they're also a lot of fun). I think you went wrong in this one because you were trying to do too much (?)

There's a saying - 'He who defends everything, defends nothing' & it looked as if you were attempting to protect all your pawns with 56.Kf3 which wasn't the best move there. Always try to keep your king a little ahead of the pawn you want to promote & sacrifice the rest if you have to - after all, you only need one queen (I hope) to finish off your opponent !

This might help explain what I mean ....

P.S.  As a general rule & if you have a choice, always try to promote a pawn that isn't on one of the rook files (a or h) because your opponent can wedge his king on the corner square & block promotion !  (Having a spare pawn does change that though)
