Chess.com charged me $99 I DID NOT want to spend

Signed up for a free trial, and then chess.com took $99 out of my bank account for a years worth of premium that i DID NOT WANT. Its been over a week since this happened and i havent heard anything from chess.com. Filed a ticket over a week ago. I can understand that sometimes it takes a while for a ticket to be answered, but this is stupid. I enjoy chess. I like learning chess. I will probably continue to play chess on this website. But chess.com is pushing it. That $99 charge was pretty shady. All i want is my money back. This is not cool.

Took a bit, but they refunded me the full $99. Really happy. Thank you chess.com!

I swear....no one reads anything.

Did you get the automated acknowledgement when you logged that ticket? If not, just check your spam folders in case it's been diverted to there.

7 days isn't uncommon with their current workloads because of the greater number of people on the site. Give it a few more days and if nothing's happened, we can see if we can contact someone directly.

I actually cancelled my subscription, but was still charged because technically I didn't cancel it because I only cancelled it on chess.com and not PayPal. Cancelling on chess.com, of course, does NOT cancel your chess.com subscription. How silly of me to think that clicking cancel on chess.com would cancel my subscription to chess.com.

Paypal and iTunes is different from paying with a credit card directly, because the recurring payment is set up on their end: otherwise, you'd have to approve a separate payment with every renewal. There's a support article outlining what you have to do to cancel a membership that tries to highlight this at https://support.chess.com/article/585-how-does-membership-renewal-work:

There's also a standalone article for Paypal alone: https://support.chess.com/article/530-how-do-i-cancel-my-premium-membership-if-i-subscribed-with-paypal

I'll make sure to read every support article on every website I ever use just in case something like this happens again.

You don't need to read every support page in advance: however, it's really helpful to check them if you've got a question or concern, especially if you're going to insult the site about it in the public forums.

Its common sense.  If you sign up for a "free trial".  You should also know that you need to cancel that free trial before it ends so you are not charged.  Its up to YOU to figure it out.  And if youre not going to take the time to READ, and COMPREHEND what you didn't read?  Again...that is your fault.  Its because of people like this that online fraud is still a problem.

Hence the saying, read the fine print. Which in this case was actual size type.

Not much different than members who sign the agreement when they join and then profess ignorance of the Terms Of Service.

I just want my money back. This is stupid. I cant afford $100 to be gone. This site man. I have never once had a problem with a subscription based game or site taking a whole year worth of subscription out of my account. Didnt expect i needed to be on guard with this site. If you have to check all this stuff before hand its pretty shady. I did not click on anything saying i was gonna be charged for a whole year. This should be automatically month by month subscription. Once again, i didnt know i had to be looking for a scam with this site.

SirenSword

To be clear, i was charged on a debit card. Am i just screwed?

KetoOn1963

"If you have to check all this stuff before hand its pretty shady."

Its actually common sense.  You always read what you're signing up for.

"I did not click on anything saying i was gonna be charged for a whole year. "

Actually, yes you did.  You just didn't read it.

I am sure they will be able to credit your account the same as if you had used a credit card.

Your first post was 16 hrs. ago, and like David said due to the workload it may be 7 days.

This practice is fairly common with shady companies like porn sites, or those weird background check sites where you can get someone's personal info. I never expected it from a site like this, but now we know.
...

What [an email from two months ago] should have said was "thanks for cancelling, we're looking forward to getting your money anyway when your subscription renews!"

It's not straight up profanity, but those are definitely insults. You may disagree, but when it comes to enforcing the Chess.com Terms of Service, it's our assessment that counts.

I don't think you're understanding the point. How would I know that this is a problem ahead of time? How would I know that cancelling my subscription doesn't actually cancel the subscription?

I feel for you. It's capitalism at its finest. Entities first grab you with a promotion and then you have to make effort to get out of it. It's sad there cannot simply be an automatic use of a credit for the event you actually want to go through with paying for a membership such as all the credit card information will not be used UNTIL said entity CONTACTS YOU and asks you if you want to continue or not. If not they tell you they will not bill you. If yes, they inform to begin billing you. In this way the onus is on the entity wanting your money, not on YOU who should not have to go through the trouble.

Simple problem solving. Maybe it should become law. I'll make a chang.org plea.

KetoOn1963

Nothing says i want to appear to be a "SJW", but i dont want to put in any effort quite like change.org.  It is just a bit above the FB "Like".

Hello @LiquidStorm , I sincerely apologize for the delay! I have now issued a full refund and cancellation as you have asked for. Please note that the refunded amount can take up to 3 days to be reflected in your account balance. Cheers!

SirenSword

YES! thank you so much! Really awesome

I’d suggest adding something like , “I’m sorry for ranting about it in a public forum, calling chess.com pretty shady, or this is stupid” and so on. Dude, looks like you were issued a refund in only two days, most places will tell you it can take up two weeks. Look, next time just be more careful to read even the small print on anybody’s web site or app. But give props to chess.com for responding quickly, cheerfully giving you the refund, and even apologizing for any delay. Own it my friend, own it.
