Thanks for the help. I decided to start the McAllen Chess Club in McAllen, Texas. McAllen is a big city not to have any organized chess. Sometimes you just gotta do stuff yourself. Anyway we will be meeting in the McAllen Public Library starting October 17 @ 1pm-5pm. If anyone has any ideas on how to promote chess clubs I would love to hear from you. I'm starting in the newspapers and community bulletins. Any info would be appreciated.

You need:
I know that might sound pompous and OTT, but you're not going to last 6 months without it.
Are you going to supply equipment, or do players have to bring their own? IMO you need at least some to accomodate potential new members who don't have.
How are you going to finance this? Look for sponsorships from local businesses. For some reason bookstores seem keen to sponsor chess clubs in South Africa.
Will there be membership fees? How much? Open a bank account for the club.
Target schools, colleges and universities for members.
Host tournaments, open to all. 30/30 is good for new players, again try to get local business to sponsor prizes.
Did you have this meeting? I am in mcallen and thinking about getting into chess. I'm just an amateur but would like to join a club for consistent play
Any new info anyone? I am looking for a place to play in McAllen. Edinburg is is not terribly far from me but not as convenient. Anyone playing chess in Mcallen, TX?
I am looking for someone to play in McAllen too. I thought about the chess club in Edinburg but I dont know. If you want we can set up a time and place too meet.
I use to play a few years ago but I am wayyy out of practice, back in corpus chrisiti we use to meet up at half price book stores and play a couple times a week. Maybe we can play at a book store in Mcallen. I just moved here so I don't know of any cool book stores to go to.
Hopefully the Mcallen People will chime in!! and we can meet up
I didn't know there was sucha chess community in the RGV. Should we all meet up somewhere? Maybe the Barnes and Nobels? On 10th?
We should deifinitely try to meet up sometime somewhere. I have been taking my kids to the war room (Edinburg) as often as my schedule allows me to. I wouldn't mind catching a few games sometime during the week. I have heard a lot of talk but no one has coordinated a meet.
hey i know im a little late. i just moved to mcallen and im looking for people to play chess with. if anyone gets together let me know.!! thanks. jose.

Hey there you are not late! Nothing has been going on so you are early! I moved here about 8 months ago but I just started getting back in to chess a few months ago. We should figure out a way to get organized and have a chess meet.
sounds good to me! but like i said i just moved here and i have no idea. i would be content with a place we can hang and play amongst ourselves and when we get a few members maybe enter a tournament or something. but if u have any ideas let me know im in mcallen near 10th
There's a tourney in McAllen in 6 days. Its on the 24th: http://www.rgvtxchess.org/e107_files/public/2011events/MCCChick.pdf

How is the war room? I've heard some really good things about it but the website looks pretty sketchy.

The warroom is a good place to play, they are open pretty much every day and hold rated tournaments every friday. The guys out there are pretty knowledgeable and you can get decent rated games. I played in my first tourny on Friday and played against a 1500,1700, and 1800. Great for kids and beginners.
Hi i just started chess and I can't find a chess club in the McAllen, Texas area. I've checked all the USCF directories and I keep running into a dead end. Does anybody know of any organized chess besides scholastic chess clubs in this area? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
