Chess.com is VERY SLOW on Safari

Hi guys,

I've been using Chess.com for quite some time on Chrome and Firefox. Both performance are top-notch (though I detect some lagginess in Chrome).

After upgrading my OSX to Mavericks, I was informed that Safari's performance faces some major overhaul that boosted it's performace. I've decided to give it a try and sure enough, Safari doesn't have any lagginess nor slowness that I've experienced before Mavericks.

However, I've tried to play a few live games using Safari and the results were dreadful. Pieces doesn't respond (I had to refresh my game), response time from mouse-over > pick the piece > move it > put it on the new square is VERY slow. So slow, that I've accidentally made a few moves that I did not intend to make.

I'm not sure whether this is a Safari issue or Chess.com's issue, but I am pretty sure that your team would like to have a look at this and check out the problem.

Let me know if you need any further information to help you guys with the investigation. Thanks!

Hi! Sorry you're having issues with the site :( I'm currently running on Mountain Lion (v. 6.0.5 of Safari) and I'm not getting any lag compared to any other browsers. Did you have the same problem prior to your upgrade to Mavericks?

Gunblade

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I can't say I've experience such lagginess on Safari; it wasn't really my main browser. I've noticed that one of Safari's main feature is this power saving option in which it will stop any plugins. You think this have something to do with it? I've turned it off but haven't got the time to check the results yet.

By the way, I'm on Safari 7. :)

jaclyn

That could be part of the reason. If that doesn't solve the problem, let me know and I can see who on the team has taken the plunge into Mavericks so we can get that tested out for you.

Gunblade

Hi Jac,

I've tested out a game after disabling it. It appears that the problem still persists. Worst, I've even faced a bug in which I cannot even move my piece even though it's my turn to move.

Would you be kind enough to talk to your team and inquire them to check this issue out?

jaclyn

hi! I've got some feedback. Unfortunately from what we've seen for whatever reason Safari is just slower on Mavericks than it is on the other versions of OSx. I've been told that Firefox seems to be the fastest Mavericks-wise. Sorry again for the trouble.

Hi Jac,

Thank you for your response. It's a bit disappointing to see that Safari is becoming the IE for Mac. Looks like I'll have to switch to Firefox. Thank you for your awesome support! :)

I'm running Safari on Mavericks and have no problems with Chess.com. I have a 2011 iMac.

RuneJohan

I have the same problem. Lagging, need to refresh in order to move etc.

Safari version: 7.0.1

OS X: 10.9.1

(a) What is Mavericks?

"Mavericks" is the name of OS X 10.9.

Ah, I can see that I am not alone! You guys are suffering the lagginess of Mavericks?

I think it has something to do with the upgrade process; I upgraded from Mountain Lion. Someone told me that we should not upgrade from Mountain Lion but make a fresh installation of Mavericks.

RuneJohan

I have a fresh Mavericks install on a completely new Macbook. Still, i have these problems. However, on Firefox everyting works perfect. Just use another browser for Chess.com than Safari.

chrka

And I have a upgraded (from Mountain Lion) to Mavericks iMac where everything works perfect in Safari. Do you have any extensions installed?

I am using Mavericks 10.9.1 and have not experienced any lag probs.  (Using macbook pro 2011)  However, if i open or move to another tab that is open during a live chess match, ( while waiting on the other player to move) I will not be able to move my pieces when i return back to the tab which has my game open.  The only way I have found to get around this is to go up to box that shows the previous moves and click the back arrow thus showing my opponents previous postion before their move and then immediatly clicking the forward arrow to bring the game back to current position.  Then I will be able to move my pieces.  Its a pain in the you know what but does troubleshoot a problem that needs to be fixed.  Hopes this helps someone.

Gunblade

@chrka no, I don't have any extensions installed. It's a very fresh Safari (seeing that I've never used Safari on my macbook since day 1).

Well, I guess I have no choice but to ditch Safari and go for Firefox. It's a shame, Safari is becoming what Internet Explorer became in Windows. lol

RuneJohan

I don´t have any extensions in Safari. I aslo experience in Safari the problem to move to another tab, in addition to that some pieces are not showing properly etc. Updated Safari on an updated Macericks on a new mac.

Why is there no comments from Chess.com on this subject. I believe it is pretty serious that Safari is not working with chess.com????

jaclyn

Hi guys- I'm looking into the issue further and will update you as soon as I get more information.

Update: We have replicated the issue and are working on getting this fixed. Thank you for your help!

Gunblade

Thank you for the feedback, jac1yn!
