Copy names

How do you make comments like this (Martin0) and the memberinfo pops up when holding the mouse over the names? Above is just a copy from some time ago when I copied the name (I don't remembered if I used chrome, FireFox or Internet explorer back then) and it just appeared like that while it doesn't become like that anymore. Using chrome it becomes like this (Martin0) for example where the info doesn't come up. If anyone know if the same can be done with game links I would be happy to know how to do that too.

Maybe it depends on website.

I will make a comment to track this topic because I'm also interested in how did they do this...

Yeah, chrome doesn't do it...

I think I may have an answer if not a solution for you Martin0.  I often copy & paste member's usernames into my posts to make sure they're spelt correctly & when you do that, they have an embedded link to that member's profile page but I can't remember a time when I saw the pop-up window on any of them. Perhaps that's because I'm a relatively new member?

I'm no I.T. specialist but I think this is what has happened :  When you copy a username into your post, you're copying not just the text but also a certain amount of the HTML code that tells your browser how to display that text (including things like pop-ups), so it looks as if a site software change removed that.

That's why you can still use old names with embedded link information because it all gets copied into your post whereas any new copied names only come with just the ordinary profile link. I hope that makes some sense.

I can answer the second part of your question more easily. This is how I create links to any webpage:  Once you've entered the text which is to contain the link, then highlight that section of text & click on the 'chain-link' icon (you'll find it on the tool-bar of the post pane to the right of the insert bullet list icon). A dialogue box will open to allow you to enter a link-URL

Then you need to obtain the URL of the page to be linked to. Open a new tab or window & search for the page you want, then copy the URL from the address bar (in Chrome I only have to click once on the URL & it highlights it so that I can copy it with Ctrl+C !).

Of course you can do this in any order just as long as you're able to paste the URL from the clipboard into the link dialogue box. Then close the box by clicking on 'Insert' & your link has been created.

It may take a little practice before you get it right - good luck with that.

No need to leave a comment MSC157, just check the 'Tracking Comments' tick-box & you'll receive notification every time there's a new comment !

@stephen_33 (see what I did there), thanks for an explanation, although I do already know how to create links. With my second question I meant that I wanted the current position in a game to popup while you have the mouse over the text view (like it does in team matches). That would for example be good at some pyramid tournaments I manage.

As for the names it seems that the popup depends on the text written. If I use the text I already have (Martin0)  I can just change the text to another username and the correct popup come up. There is a big disadvantage though as you get to my homepage if you click the link and the popup disappears if you change the link, so I haven't come up with a good solution yet.

Ah - at cross purposes there!

That's interesting!  Yes, I noticed that although hovering over my name, raises my pop-up information, the profile link is still to your page & not mine.  The trouble is, you're trying to modify information that you can't even see (the embedded HTML code), never mind edit.

I think what you are asking for would require a rebuild of the site software but you could always put it in as a suggestion?

Edit:  It's an intriguing idea though & if I think of anything, I'll get back to you   Smile

I was mostly interested if there was an easy trick to do it since it has been done before. I guess it is true that I would like it to automatically pop-up players information and current position in games when the link to profiles and games is used. I will send a ticket to staff.

Martin0

I have found a trick to do it (although it requires a little work and does edit the HTML-code)

First you need to be an admin of any group.

Copy this link to my profile that works with popup (Martin0)

Then you go to that group and go to Post News.

Paste the link (Martin0) in the text. Click on the HTML button

change every instance with Martin0 to the name you want the popup to work for.

Click on "Update". You now have a working text you can copy with the HTML-code to make the pupup appear with the memberinfo (example: stephen_33). Just paste it wherever you want it.

That's incredible!

@Martin0
I'm astounded that you can edit the HTML of pages here as just a group admin. - usually it's only someone with the status of a site administrator who can do that!

That's what I was partly referring to above, although from reading the code that controls diagram pop-ups, it looked to me as if that's controlled within the CSS & you won't be able to modify that because it's held in separate files.

All very interesting - I'll be giving this some thought     Smile

Martin0

It surprised me too (although I'm not familiar with these things), I just accidentally saw it among the things you can do when you post news.

stephen_33

Now that's interesting Martin - although I'm not an admin. of any kind, I just managed to change your name in my post#13 to the link with pop-up type!

It's a bit cumbersome but you have to paste in the code you want to embed in the page, then post it (but all you see at that point is the actual HTML) & then Edit again but don't make any changes & post it for a second time.

Only then does your section of code embed into the page & you see the final result.

Let's see if that works without the link: Martin0

This is an old topic. Just use @ followed by a username and the popup will work.

stephen_33

Yes, embedding content from other places has been made considerbly easier I think over the past seven plus years.

Woah, you guys are still here. Cool.

LavenderLilac123

You put an @ in the front. for instance @LavenderLilac123. Im using chrome so it does work on chrome
