Country selection

Why are England, Great Britain, and United Kingdom all options in the country selection drop-down box? Does it matter which one I, or people from Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland pick?

buho

I used to live in England and when I was suscribing to chess.com I found all those options and I really got confused about what to choose! So me and my family decided to move to Paraguay.

Now I can happily play chess!

I doubt it at least not to members from the USA, most of whom would be unable to tell you if Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are countries, cities or continents

When I registered, United Kingdom was the default so I just selected that. But then I played against someone whose country was Scotland. I was confused, as Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom (as are England, Wales, and Northern Ireland), not a separate country. I checked and saw all those as options, and I changed it to England.

Is GBR seriously a separate option to UK? That's ridiculous! Cool

im not english but it´s easy...all of them has your own "nation" and when i say nation, its the natives from that states. They see that state like his own with there own governments. Scotland it´s the best example of that. The only thing that keep the states together it´s because they have just one ruler(the queen) and the 4 states have a constitutional monarchy in London that rules all 4 together. The Commonwealth its another example. The queen even in our days, rules in many countries like australia for example :P. Problem solved jejejejeje

Thing is though, Great Britain is just a subset of the United Kingdom, minus Northern Ireland. So say you're a Scot, fair enough if you choose to fly the Scottish flag instead of the UK one, since you might consider yourself more a Scot than a resident of the UK. But the only reason you could logically have to fly the GBR flag instead of the UK one is if you don't like Northern Ireland. Foot in mouth

Great Britain is just the big island; it doesn't include any offshore islands. So a Scot who doesn't like the Orkney Islands might fly the GB flag Tongue out

I also see no real reason to have both Great Britain and United Kingdom. But what if you consider yourself British just as much as English/Welsh/Scottish? I chose England because if you know about the United Kingdom, then you know that if you're from England, you're also from the United Kingdom. If you choose United Kingdom or Great Britain, there's no way of telling which UK/GB nation you're from unless you say which town/city you're from.

Can we not have both the United Kingdom and the England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland flags?

-waller-

Lol, this is true - although Wikipedia tells me it can also refer to the union of the three countries England, Scotland and Wales including all the islands as well. I guess in the main sense of the word though you are right!

Bizarrely enough, if you drop the "Great" and just say Britain, it refers to the UK, not Great Britain. Which is just plain stupid if you ask me!

And who knows what'll happen if the Scots become independent Yell

Are you one of them?

United kingdom its the four states together. England it´s just the biggest state, that´s why when we say England it´s like saying United Kingdom.. also because the capital is in England, not in scotland ,not in wales.....

So... Paraguay... what can I say...

It is all a matter of Football (soccer in USA)-

At the beginings of World Cups the British (meaning England and whatever country under its influence, except, perhaps, Canada) were registered as "individual" national teams because they (the British, who else?) claimed to be the "creators" of the game. . . and it was "logical" that each island had its national selection playinng the cup.

Since the most powerful entity in the World is Mr Money and having more teams competing meant more money, then. . . "voilá!". "madonna!" "ole!" "hail!". . . let the British have more teams. . . and more chances of winning. . .

And so is History written. . . Did you know that the first postal stamp was British. . . . and that it had no identification at all. . . because it was taken by granted that even in the darkest of the forests everybody knew about England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, British Guyana, Belice, not to mention Great Britain or United Kingdom, , ,

. . . sorry. . . forgot Jamaica, Trinidad,. Grenada. . . oh heck. . . my memory
