In my trials of Google Chrome, I have found it to be resource hungry. Of course it is still in Beta, so that will most likely change when it is released.
CPU Utilization

Fzweb - thanks for your post. I don't think the problem is in the specs, I have 1G ram, dual processor and a reasonable amount of bells and whistles.
Evil - thanks to you as well. Just wondering if this is currently seen as a problem to be worked on, or if it is just me experiencing it!
Thanks all,
Andrea

It will be worked on if it is a problem recognized by the developers, I imagine... but so far it seems it is just you and I experiencing it!

If you want to see cpu utilisation soar with Chrome, use multiple tabs. its great that they operate independently but they command too much resources. i am back to firefox until i know why that is the case.

Thanks for your comment, Amac.
I completely second it (nothing is coming for free in IT), but at least in my case, multiple tabs are not the cause here, because I have the same issue with just one tab open.
would be great if someone from staff could confirm if this is a known bug (being investigated and eventually fixed), or not.
Thanks again all,
Andrea

browsers use as many available resources as possible at times. also, our boards use complicated javascript. we will work on board optimization.

Hmmm... I am using Chrome on vista and I decided to test the CPU usage myself. For me it stuck at 26-28% when I tried various applications on chess.com including forums, a normal corrisponance game and, to my suprise, live chess.
I have a few other windows open at the moment.
So Chrome isn't acting up for me.

I'm using Chrome in XP SP3 and am seeing big CPU usage when using this site, as well. I am pretty sure it is an issue with Chrome, though!

Actually, I just noticed usage of CPU is usage also here on the forum (no boards involved), so it must definitely be something with the site...
I trust our all-powerful developers will correct this anomaly eventually

I used to experience very much the same thing with IE. I've found Firefox to be much better for this site.
I use Firefox, and have done for about 10 years; but it seems to me that when playing chess CPU usage is completely irrelevant, unless it slows down your system responce in Live Chess.

Was wondering if they changed anything: since they deployed the new version (with the Computer Analysis new feature), I don't have anymore the CPU high usage problem when a board is open. It remains high with threads opened (like now that I am writing I have 33% CPU utilization), but not anymore with the board - which is the important thing!

I have this problem in 2017. I have a multi-core machine but one maxes out on chess.com and drains my battery.

Martin will no doubt be along shortly...
Did you call?
The site uses Javascript and when you are actively using a feature that communicates constantly with the site, it will use CPU cycles. How efficiently that occurs is a combination of the browser's ability to interpret the code, the complexity of the code, and how efficient the code is.
Though, the majority of this topic was about the site over 8 years ago....but the reasons are pretty much the same now.
Also, to the other posters, @erik is the only staff member that has posted in this topic.
Hi all.
I have noticed (through the "task manager" window) that when I have a board open (for example when playing Online Chess), my CPU utilization goes up to 30%/50%, which sounds really weird to me. I was expecting close to zero CPU utilization, given there should not be that much going on in the background.
I am using Google Chrome with Windows XP.
Any ideas about why this is happening?
Thanks in advance for any reply!
Andrea
