How can you play anything other than regular chess on the app?
Go to the events section then you will have the desktop version of chess.com on the app,from there you can choose variants

That can work, but is likely to be buggy since the site is not designed to work within that embedded browser and the browser may not support everything, especially in /variants.
It's better to just use a mobile browser, though the variants in Play woul work better on the mobile optimized site, than /variants even.
