difference between live chess and online chess

This may be a lame question but what is the difference between the two.

I want my kid to learn chess from an omline tutor and he wants to use ICC dasher. We use a mac and are having trouble getting dasher to run in mac.

The tutor wants to analyze the game by going back step by step and he also wants to set up some tactics for my kid to solve. Can both of these be done with one of the chess apps.

Thanks

Live chess is played with both players online at the same time using standard time controls making moves in real time. Online chess is a correspondence format with days per move time limit. All games played by members are visible to the public on their profile, or live when played on the server. The live server also has a feature for instructors where they can setup positions for a student and chat with them using an analysis board room. These can be done on the site using a browser. In terms of the apps, at least for the android app, member games can be viewed but not custom positions.
