On my Android devices I'm using the Chess.com app.
Looking at prices, it could be something with euro/usd forex, although both are clearly mentioning the euro sign. So I'm assuming the 89, 44 and 27 are usd prices really and that prices with fractions like 72.12, 35.70 and 21.11 are converted euro prices.
The 89, 44, 27 prices are the Euro prices. What the others are I don't know. Not British pounds, which was my first guess. Anyone know of another currency worth a bit more than a Euro?
Upgrading on mobile from within the app gives me a Google Play error ('error retrieving information from the server')
Jordanian Dinar maybe? Not Kyrgyzstani Som anyway...
But if it clearly says euro in both cases, this is something that should be fixed. Any e-commerce site should have those things set up correct at all time.
Yes, of course it should. I was just having fun trying to find what currency the other numbers were. Jordanian Dinar is the closest match I can find, but that overvalues the Euro very slightly.
Do bear in mind that a number of currencies share symbols, so you could correctly have two different prices using the $ sign, for example, if one was in US dollars and another in Canadian dollars. I don't know of any currency that shares a sign with the Euro, though.
Its 100 euro per year from the ipad app... luckily I found out before purchasing so I used my laptop to upgrade for 90...
My best guess now is that both the website and the app are converting the usd price to a local currency real time, which means fetching current exchange rates. The app probably fails at this point and may be falling back to old data which is no longer accurate.
Or you are charged a higher price because you can afford an apple device. Airlines and online warehouses do this all the time
Keep in mind that Appstore on Apple and Play Store on Android get 30% (!!) of the profit.
So if you purchase something valued € 100 from app X then developer of app X only gets € 70 and the rest goes to Apple or Android, depending on which platform you bought it.
So in (nearly) every case it is cheaper to buy services or goods from the website, rather than in the app, because in the app the developers have to overcome the losses caused by that 30%.
Hence that you found it cheaper on the mobile versions than on the desktop is rather dubious.

I think what Cuda418 said is the correct explanation. In general credit card transactions are very expensive (due to fraud, chargebacks etc). But Google Play is likely big enough of an intermediate that those costs can be cut down significantly.

That is true. The credit card companies usually charge around 2.5%, but from 89 to 72.12 euros (nearly 20% reduction!) seems very implausible.

Depends on many things. Card issuer rates vary too. AMEX is very high, probably the highest of all the issuers. That, and everyone who is handling the transaction is pinching pennies.
It's not that simple anymore where it used to be issuer straight to PoS. Now, with all these app pay featuers, many people are touching the transactions and adding their fees.
Hello,
On my smartphone, the subscriptions fees per year are: €72.12 , €35.70 and €21.11 for Diamond, Platinum and Gold respectively.
Looking at chess.com via a browser on a desktop pc, these fees are: €89, €44 and €27
I was assuming that going premium (any package) applies to all devices in an equal way, but since there is a price difference I doubt that is the case. On the other hand, I have not read anything mentioning a difference like that on the subscription pages.
Could support please help and clarify this? Or should I simply subscribe via mobile and not ask any questions? ;-)
