Small correction to the steps above - apologies to all:
9. Select [Snap] .bar file; 10. "Install"; 11. DDPB should report back "Done"; 12. on BB go to Settings/ security and privacy/ Development mode and frmo On to Off; (C-Download App from Snap on BB) 13. Back to BB and click on the [Snap] icon; 14. In Snap find Chess.com App (“Chess – Play & learn”), then "Download", "Open installer", "Install", "Accept", "Open"; 15. Chess.com App log in screen appears and off you go!
cheers!
BB 10.2.1... OS just released so I revisited trying to sideload the android app into my z10. NB Am running release 10.2.1.2102 on Z10 (model STL100-2) and have Windows 8.1 (all updates applied) on a Samsung i3 laptop.
No luck direct through google play (I have a google account and can log in - but Google Play doesnt recognise any attached devices when accessed through a laptop, and doesnt recognise that I've allowed cookies when I access through my z10 browser etc).
So I then searched on-line for a .apk or .bar file but only found old websites where the file had been taken down. So, no luck until I stumbled on a Blackberry forum chat http://bit.ly/1hl0sV0 where someone (Sept'13) referred to a site called Snap.
Accessed the URL through lap top browser [a little odd "redlightoflove.com/snap", but a client for google play so worth a crack I thought]. Clicked on and downloaded the .bar onto my laptop, used DDPB to side load this it onto my z10.
All steps for downloading and sideloading: (A-Set up [Laptop]) 1. download and install from Java the latest version of JRE runtime (.exe file) http://bit.ly/IKP9VU; 2. download DDPB (.msi file, I selected desktop shortcut so easier to find) from goodereader http://bit.ly/1eBqOKB; 3. download Snap (.bar file) http://bit.ly/M2ncu6; (B-Sideload from Laptop to BB) 4. on BB go to Settings/ security and privacy/ Development mode to find out the BB IP address and change Development mode from Off to On; 5. connect BB to laptop (did mine by wire, not sure if works by wifi etc); 6. launch DDPB on laptop; 7. In DDPB enter BB IP address and BB password and “connect” [will show your BB details in bottom left corner of DDPB when connected]; 8. "Add" and browse to laptop "Downloads" folder; 9. Select [Snap] .bar file; 9. "Install"; 10. DDPB should report back "Done"; (C-Download App from Snap on BB) 11. Back to BB and click on the [Snap] icon; 12. In Snap find Chess.com App (“Chess – Play & learn”), then "Download", "Open installer", "Install", "Accept", "Open"; 13. Chess.com App log in screen appears and off you go!
- Good start - no longer do you get the "check for update" message and loop.
- Simple start page of 6 buttons (play live, play online, play computer, Tactics trainer, Video lessons, Settings)
- "play live": thin line of advertising across the near top of screen. seemed to get stuck on "loading". click on < on BB to return to Start
- "play online": advertising at top again. buttons for /tournaments, /stats, and below any Current games. /tournaments to access the home screen with home/ play/ learn/ share/ forums/ more and you are off and running ...)
- tried "play computer", "tactics trainer" briefly and seem to work ok. "video lessons" havent tried. "settings" range of options and at bottom "invite a friend" (SMS, email option)
Screen sometimes jumps about a bit for "play online" as top of screen app data (I think) downloads (doesnt jump when board is in play)
Good luck all!
