Followers v. Friends

What's the difference between followers and friends? 

well followers get notifacations about u but not ur friend

I know that friends = followers but followers ≠ friends, but I don't know why.

I want friends, not followers. Is there any way to remove followers?

I have 103 followers and 99 friends. And hey, you are one of them!

Yes it is every time someone looks at your profile but I'm not sure if it is also how often people click your name

I know there is an official description by chess.com somewhere. What I recall was something like this:

Being a "friend" is the same as a "follow" but with more features like notifications when they log online. Follow is not necessarily a friend, but is still notified upon the other person posting a forum/blog etc. Following is common for bloggers/writers because you are notified when they post without being a "friend." Plus, many players (GMs especially) do not accept friend requests, so following them may be your only option. 

At least I understood it to be some small difference like that. "Friend = follow plus some other stuff"

People who are following and not your friend really like your posts, so consider It honorable to have followers who are not your friends. When you fried someone, you automatically follow them and they automatically follow you.

That depends on how many followers you want. Personally, I am honored to have followers; yet, I am happy with a few good quality friends
