I know I'm always suspicious when asked to pay to use a walking trail. It's part of nature, folks! And so are we. Should be open to all of us.
Free trail

the credit card prevents people from taking trials over and over again under different accounts.
you can contact support for more payment methods: http://support.chess.com - enjoy!

Thanks erik,
but that is not necessary as you have control of accounts and you have not answered the second part of the question..I feel that asking for card would put people off and it should be changed after all the hacking recently on the internet site...and your link did not help me !
Thanks for your time

As Erik has said elsewhere: free trials backed by a credit card is the method common to many service providers.

How does the OP expect to pay for this service once the trial is up, if indeed there is a genuine interest in paying for it?

Well Thanks artfizz,
I am sorry I do not see how it stop people having multiple accounts, when they can just use a different card then cancelling within ten days and beside it does solve problem of people who do not have a credit card or want to use them online.
Surely if there was a customers service telephone available to people then this would resolve the issue and I would think that this site makes enought money to set up such a service and makes good business sense to provide people when someone to talk too..Anyway I check out your link.
You should know many company are now stopping the use of credit check before you pay.like(play.co, ebay and so on) and what wrong with paypal? or Direct Debit ect?
Thanks again

chess.com does accept other payment methods for signing up for standard memberships, but you should be aware that for each method they use, there is a cost in implementation, maintaining and securing.
As you rightly point out, the current scheme excludes non-credit-card users.

There are several routes to getting technical help:
Asking in the Help&Support category of the forum harnesses the 'group-intelligence' of the thousands of members who have seen such questions come up before.
Contacting chess.com support directly (via the link at the bottom of every page) seems to work well.
You already have the head honcho handling your question: an indication of the responsiveness of staff on this site.
Offering local telephone support in every country seems like overkill?
You should know many company are now stopping the use of credit check before you pay.like(play.co, ebay and so on) and what wrong with paypal? or Direct Debit ect?

Many payment methods (like PayPal) are only supported in specific parts of the world; it's not as universal as you might think. Direct Debits are mainly used for recurring payments. Each transaction generally also incurs a charge from the provider (often a bank) to the user organisation (chess.com, in this case); some transaction charges (e.g. for Electronic Funds Transfer) can be quite steep.

These posting are really old some over 3 years ago the most recent is over year old.Think it time to change this policy...
I just wonder how many people are put off the site but this so called free trial, you know what they say and it's true nothing in this world is truely free!!!

This is the up-to-date statement.
Why must I enter credit-card info to start a FREE trial?

If we did not ask for a credit-card number when someone starts a free trial, there would be nothing to prevent people using multiple Chess.com accounts to get free premium benefits over and over again. Also, please remember...
http://support.chess.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/170/0/why-must-i-enter-credit-card-info-to-start-a-free-trial But it's your call whether to trust chess.com with your credit card details. |

Thanks again artfizz for input,
I do understand the cost of setting up a customer service number worldwide, but as you say there are thousands upon thousands of customers on this site, then it should have the money to do it and a centralised centre could be use for the whole world and would reduce costs. Anyway I said above this has put me off this site and will continue to use it free for now until I find a Chess site that delievers good customer service and be fair to non credit card customers if such site is out there. There is no way of knowing how old that posting is you pointed out as there is no date on it, but I would suggest it quite old because it is part of so called free trial which i would think has been around since the site opened to get new people in...
I leave you with last point, In 21st Century, companies must provide many ways for customers to pay for it's service other credit card and customers should not have to wait weeks or days for email replys, because it my experience that does not work..
Be blessed

Hi,
I like to try the free trail I have been offered, But not use my credit card online and you should not require this until after the 10 days have expired, Secondly how can call it free when you require this information so you automatically bill me after the 10 days !! I do not think so..What other mothods of payment do you take ??
Cheers
FaithFlicks
PS I been happy to discuss this with somepone the telephone but cannot find any UK numbers for Chess.com, Do you have a customer support number in the UK??
