You're worried about one glitch out of +1000 games? (I'm presuming you're talking about Live Chess Standard not Blitz)
Tell chess.com you'll do all the programming necessary to implement your suggestion. OK, just half since you're a premium member.

...I am a lead developer for IBM...so I certainly could.
Just making a reasonable suggestion in a reasonable way.
What a charmingingly useful response from yourself though.
I've had the same thing happen to me dozens of times. It is annoying. Often, I'm in a winning position, and lose my internet connection, and then, lose the game. This *just* happend to me. I was up a piece and I had 22min 11sec left on the clock.
This happens to me *all* the time. I play on my phone a lot, so I get frequent disconnections, but rarely for more than a minute or so. What I've found is that if you are disconnected from a game for 90 seconds or more, you can pretty well expect that you're going to be forced into game abandonment, regardless of the game clock situation. It pisses me off. I only play 30 minute games really...and so this really makes no sense. I'll get disconnected when i have 29 minutes on my clock and reconnect 2 minutes later to find i've lost due to abandonment.
Further, this has happened to me enough times that my account has now been restricted for not following the fair play policy, presumably for frequent game abandonment. I cannot tell you the steady stream of profanity that spilled from my mouth when I discovered this. I pay for this site for christsakes. INFURIATING.
Kickassandgiggle's suggestions are completely valid and none of the trollish comments from Nimzoroy should be allowed to detract from them.
This problem seriously needs to be addressed otherwise I'll be discontinuing my premium membership.
I'm a new premium member, and experienced my first internet connection interruption during a recent standard game, at around move 20. It took over five minutes for me to get back to the game, but by that time, it was over and the game labled "Game Abondonment".
I agree, it's infuriating. I'd never abandon a game, I'd never do that to a player. And so now this is a strike against me, according to chess.com? Insulting and unfair! As stated above, it needs to be seriously addressed, or I too will abandon my premium membership.
Just had a game where my connectivity was bad. It was my home network, it happens sometimes. Quickly switched to hotspot on phone. Took around a minute, definitely less than two. I was afraid to abandon the game, so I was quick. Sure enough, the second it connected to hotspot I lost do to abandoning even though I was in a winning position and still had time. It is really annoying. I'm allowed to use my time on the clock, so why abandon only after a couple of minutes. it was a 5 | 0 game, so just let the timer run out and give people a chance. Seems like it has always been a problem based on the dates of this post.
I just had the same thing happen on a 10 minute game, and I reconnected around 30 seconds to 90 seconds (at maximum) later. That is WAAAAY too fast for it to consider the game as abandoned, it is ridiculous.

A game will be considered abandoned if you disconnect for too long. It depends on the time control for how long you can be disconnected. If you’re disconnected, you have 10% of the base time plus 40 x increment, with a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 3 minutes to reconnect. You will lose if you can't reconnect in that time.
Just played a 30|0 live game.
For the first time in ages, my internet connection dropped. It cannot have been down more than 5 minutes.
It comes back, I reconnect, and I have lost due to game being abandoned.
But I had more time on my clock than my opponent.
How is that fair?
Disconnect abandonment formula should be tweaked to take more into account:
1) How much time as a percentage of the game has one been disconnected. 5 minutes of a 60 minutes game (30 * 2) is not even 10%, that should not count.
2) Whether the disconnected party has more time left than his opponent or not.
Very disappointed as it was a won position for me and he really should have already resigned anyway...
