Game Editor Chess Board

The chess boards I created with the Game Editor have changed. I basically pasted a pgn and embeded it. Now it no longer displays the forward and backwards arrows and is different than the ones in the articles.

hi, QBrown, I am not so sure I understand. You're saying that the chess boards that you created have changed. OK, so I went into your content and found this board you created a long time ago (IMAGES ONLY):

And this is another board from today's article by Silman:

The arrows are beneath the notatation panel. The only difference I see between your game board and Silman's is that Silman filled in his game header so you see names, a date and an eco code.

So just to be clear are you talking about these game boards or a different kind? It might be that you chose Puzzle or Diagram and not Game or Sequence of Moves.

Thank you very much for your patience! I'm curious to see what the issue is.

Yes, they have changed since a few days (to a week) ago - I've only just got round to reporting it to H&S myself. The change affects the way all PGN's are displayed as diagrams, so presumably all historical content is changed as well.

The most irritating thing is the removal of the 'Flip' button, so you can no longer view a game as Black (with your pieces at the bottom) if the diagram has been posted from White's perspective.

Hi, Stephen, I'll make sure to mention the flip button next time I talk to the CEO and VP. That's a good idea!

You might already be using this method already but in case someone else doesn't know:

If you want to see Black on the bottom you can click on the magnifying glass (which will open a new window with the game or sequence) and then click the third tab 'game editor' and there will be an option to flip the board. Of course it's not the quickest fix but it has the advantage of letting you see the board with your preferences. Sometimes the annotator might choose a piece style or board color that you don't like, but this encourages the user to customize the board the way he likes.

So, thanks again, Stephen. I won't forget to mention your suggestion the next chance I get.

IM Squarology, it wasn't so much a suggestion as an appeal to have the old format of posted diagrams/games/puzzles restored to how it was before. I for one much preferred it that way.

I can't understand why it was changed - I don't like the new format/design at all!

I see. Well, thank you for voicing your opinion, Stephen. I love the new diagrams though I have seen that it was a polarizing change. 80% love it while 20% dislike it. I'll still mention the flip option; I love that idea! For me if it had that it would be perfect.

I hope somehow you can get used to it... and maybe even like it one day. And remember, Stephen, if you have any more suggestions or appeals, we'll be happy to hear them.

Thanks for the replys. It looks like all the boards on the site have been updated to the new diagrams, but my embeded diagrams I created months before are not updated and worse the functionality has changed.

If I go to the game editor and try to recreate the diagrams and then embed them, I still get a diagram without arrows.

Hi, Qbrown, that's pretty strange. Of course I'd like to take a look for you so could you link me to the boards you are talking about? Thank you!

It's been fixed. I believe tech support found the bug.

Just a small side note here about having White at the bottom of the diagram. (and Black at the top).  When I learnt chess 40+ years ago, all the diagrams in the books and magazines always had White at the bottom and Black at the top.  I believe this to be an underlying cause to one of my 'quirks' about playing chess.  You can give me the same diagramed position, (as from a problem), from both the Black (at the bottom) and the White (at the bottom) perspective; and, I'll never 'see' the tactical and strategic advantages from the Black perspective that I easilly 'see' from the White.

I have found that playing chess, both on-line and on the my computer, I must have White at the bottom and Black at the top of the current game diagram in order to play.  At another website, when I played the Black pieces, they always showed the Black pieces at the bottom of the diagram, there was no choice,  I would always lose; usually by just hanging my Queen or Rooks.  Am I wrong to assume that if I were a really good player, I should be able to see the board equally well despite the diagram's orientation?

Interestingly enough, when I have the Black pieces and play over the board, I play  the board from the Black side and do well.
