Game Review / Analysis really slow?

Hi,

Are other diamond members having trouble analysing their games?

The Game Review server-side analysis works extremely well, about 10 seconds and it analyses the whole game at depth 20. However, the problem starts when you start looking at potential moves / using 'Retry' and doing incorrect moves.

I believe this is the browser analysis, since it's supposed to be client-side anyway, I don't see why the chess.com server overload issues should be affecting this? But it says depth 18 should take ~10 seconds (and it used to), but seems to take ages now, quite often 'unmaking' the move, then remaking it gives you feedback quicker.

The strangest part, the eval bar, and the lines seem to update straight away, so I think it might just be a bug in the feedback system?

Personally, I really like to just make moves and see the feedback in real time when analysing (as opposed to just looking at the line moves), because I think it's a more interactive method of analysing, but it's just unacceptably slow at the moment.

If chess.com staff could let me know what's happening / Fix it / tell me what I'm doing wrong that would be appreciated. The feedback seems to work fine, and much faster on mobile, which also makes very little sense, so I'm sure there's a bug/issue here. Also, if people are having similar issues, please post about it below so we can get it sorted.

Just republished to Help and Support.

Expected post to get more traffic, since it's a fairly significant problem, the fact everyone isn't complaining makes me wonder if I'm missing something?

Would love chess.com staff input, since at the moment I'm considering cancelling my subscription. Exploring the game through making my own moves, and looking at the feedback symbols is my favourite way to analyse. This is totally impossible when the symbols sometimes don't appear, and you have to remake the move multiple times to get the feedback to work (eval bar, and lines seem to update very quickly, so, like I said, I'm fairly sure this is a bug).

I expected it to get fixed, but it's been happening for far too long now.

Thanks,

Ned

You have to use the phone for analysis and turn off “feedback” and turn on “engine line”. Then you follow the green arrow one move at a time. Seriously that’s the best way to analyze on this site. Feedbacks is garbage and useless for trying out different moves because it takes forever and is inaccurate after it takes forever. I think it’s a problem too and I made a whole long post about it one time and no one responded lol

@FavelaSwagKing exactly, it works on mobile! I'm sure this is fixable sad.png

If you mean fixable like they’re gonna fix it Idk

Retry uses your Game Review depth and submits the move to the server if the retry wasn't the best move generated by the initial review process.

The lines are coming from the browser analysis. The eval is read directly from the review until the retry result comes back from the server.

I'm not seeing the same problems that you are seeing.

I use an Android tablet with the Chesscom mobile app and I also use the Android Chrome Progressive Web App, (PWA), that I installed from the Chesscom mobile website. Both seem to run Game Review and analysis just fine for me.

Nnnnneeeedddd

@KingMoored I did mention that the mobile app actually works a *lot* faster (which makes very little sense). Not really sure what the PWA is, and a simple google search didn't prevail any chess.com desktop applications or anything like that? (I'm looking for a solution for my desktop computer).

Could you elaborate on the PWA maybe post a link?

Thanks,

Ned

A Progressive Web Application (PWA) is a type of web application that provides an app-like experience to a website. PWAs are fast, load quickly, and provide mobile users with a better experience when accessing a website on a mobile device. If you navigate to Chesscom using Chrome on Android, you can install the Chesscom PWA on your device.

I predominately use my Android Tablet and the Chesscom mobile app to access Chesscom. But currently, the Game Review delivered to the Android app is not the same version/code that is delivered to the web so I use both the Android mobile app and the Chesscom PWA for Game Review on my Tablet.

What browser are you using for Game Review on your PC? Are you running any browser extensions or browser virus protections?

As a test, you could try to run Game Review in your browser using Incognito mode. Does it run faster when using Incognito mode?

The problems you are describing sound like it could be a connectivity problem. Is your PC wired directly to you home network, or are you using WiFi?

Nnnnneeeedddd

I'm using Chrome, and my internet is fine. Like I said, the eval bar and the lines update in about 3 seconds, so I'm fairly sure it's just an issue with the client-side feedback system.

KingMoored

But there is no client-side feedback system in Game Review, like Martin mentioned, "Retry uses your Game Review depth and submits the move to the server if the retry wasn't the best move generated by the initial review process."

KingMoored

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the problem.

You originally described "The Game Review server-side analysis works extremely well, about 10 seconds and it analyses the whole game at depth 20. However, the problem starts when you start looking at potential moves / using 'Retry' and doing incorrect moves.",

Or is the problem you are describing is with the Analysis Tab. The Analysis Tab does not have a Retry Button.

Nnnnneeeedddd

I assumed that the Retry used client side analysis (since it seems to have a similar speed problem, when it's not precomputed). But I'm primarily talking about feedback in the Analysis tab yes happy.png

Lag on Retry isn't too much of a pain, since it's just one move, but I like to explore lines looking at the feedback system (making random good looking moves, to see if they're actually good). I do this in the Analysis tab, and it's extremely slow.

KingMoored

You can also do multiple Retries for a single move in Game Review and since the server only needs to compute one line, it is plenty fast.

How many lines and at what depth are you computing in the Analysis Tab? I find two lines at 18 depth is good enough for me on the web and on the Android mobile app. If you are using three lines in Analysis, try using two lines and reduce your depth.

Nnnnneeeedddd

Even at one line on depth 14 it's an issue,

It really is extremely slow, and I'm running on quite a powerful desktop. Like I said the eval and lines load very fast, so fairly sure this is an issue with the feedback system (actually placing the symbols on the pieces [best, brilliant, blunder etc...]).

Nnnnneeeedddd

To be clear,

I can use the eval and line result to see best moves, and analyse. However, I just *really like* the feedback system, and am annoyed that it's broken, It's the following loading animation that is the problem:

It will seemingly load indefinitely, until you unmake and remake the move a few times. It didn't do this in the past.

KingMoored

I do not see what you are seeing.

I believe you need to run Game Review before you run Analysis. It's possible your browser is not receiving the Game Review Move Feedback Data.

Are you running Game Review and letting it complete before you click on Analysis? Or are you clicking on the Star Magnifying Glass (Lower Left in the Analysis tab), after you enter the Analysis Tab

EDIT: The problem you are seeing could be a connectivity problem to the Chesscom server. Is your PC wired or WiFI?

Nnnnneeeedddd

If you click on game review, then make a random move (not part of the reviewed game), it auto-switches to the analysis tab.

If you do this, and you may need a diamond membership for it to show, I'm not sure. It will have a feedback option. This is the feature that I want to work effectively.

I'm not concerned about anything server-side it's specifically the browser analysis that is running very slowly.

Connectivity is not a problem.

KingMoored

When I am in Game Review, I can not make a random move, I can only Retry a move from the game.
