Game Review / Analysis really slow?

Beyond the 18 move standard analysis, it's just broken, and has been like that for about a month. Which is extra dumb since the analysis is done on your computer, so it shouldn't really eat up more server resources.

What's your review depth set to? Because it's not going to return anything until that depth is reached on the browser engine. It will likely be at least as much time as the review takes on the server side.

I tested this on my high-end Windows 11 PC.

At Depth 18, I was seeing around 6-7 sec wait time to categorize a move, after making several moves, it would take around 10-15 sec to categorize the move and then go back to around 6-7 sec per move. This behavior repeated as I made random moves for both White and Black pieces in Analysis.

EDIT: I made a 1 min mp4 file of my testing, but I can't figure out how to insert it in a Forum post.

It used to be instant a few months ago before e update. Idk how accurate it was tho. Not that it’s accurate now just about every single game the best move will show as an inaccuracy at least once. Some positions are simple and pretty quick but some will take thirty seconds and after thirty seconds the best move might show as an inaccuracy. Lol great. They’re putting all these resources into all these coaching features but they haven’t got the basic analysis really good yet

They can't really speed up how fast a engine gets to a certain depth. The time difference is going to depend on how deep you want it to go

So it's possible that it used to be at a much lower depth and a change was made to instead use a the Game Review setting.

Lots of times a blunder is a blunder from a super low depth and doesn’t change. Which should take a computer a fraction of a second. Idk why the feedback doesn’t appear instantly and then change as depth increases. That’s what the engine line does and it’s nice bc if u wanna be sure u just wait. But idk anything about coding so 🤷🏼‍♂️

On my Android tablet, it's amazing how fast the native running app is at categorizing moves in Analysis compared to the PC / browser. On Android, it calculates the move category almost instantly, and sometimes it will change the move category after a few seconds, and then change it again.

Chesscom should consider scraping their web browser architect and develop a Chesscom Branded Gaming Console using a 2-in-1 10 inch Android Tablet, with removable keyboard, mouse, touchpad, WiFi / Ethernet and HDMI output wink

@KingMoored yup, the mobile version is fine. The lichess version is fine. Chess.com needs to fix their browser analysis.

@Martin_Stahl I think the primary improvement would be to show the feedback symbol, before the full analysis is done. That way if it's a blunder or something, it would show right away. I think this is what the mobile version does.

Usually the apps end up aligning with the web. I'm not sure that is something even being looked at. Seems like multiple changes would cause more confusion to many people.

@Martin_Stahl Yh that's why I wanted to flag it. I'm sure it used to be faster?? Anyway, ik the chess com team are swamped atm, so I'm gonna let this thread die for now.

The biggest reason I want it to be fast, is because the chess com game review is by far the best. With the game report, accuracy, symbols, cloud analysis etc...

Hi,

I may be a bit late, but I think I have the same problem. I opened this post: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/game-review-always-stuck-when-retrying-moves-around-10-15-79142601
I also submitted two support tickets on february 20th and 27th but still got no answer. Quite annoying as I like to retry and retry to find the best moves and I'm unable to do so since more than a month ago.

@FavelaSwagKing @KingMoored @cactusimplacable

Oh my word, I think I found the problem, and King Moored actually said it, but I didn't test it properly.

If you have feedback on AND the lines ON they are seemingly calculated separately. Therefore, if you turn the ENGINE LINES off the computer can then calculate the feedback (which has it's own lines!!!!).

King Moored was right, I don't think ur supposed to be able to have them both on at the same time!!!

PS: I did actually say 'even if you turn engine lines off it doesn't speed it up' earlier, this is wrong, after testing it in a few games, it definitely seems to make a difference. Very happy I sorted this happy.png

Nice that you solved it! May you post a screenshot of where do you turn off the lines please? I can't find it

@cactusimplacable idk if it'll fix the speed in Game Review itself, I'm more just talking about local analysis.

Anyway, u turn the lines of here in the Analysis tab:

Let me know if it improves it at all for you happy.png

Thanks for sharing, but it didn't work for me... After three moves that weren't in the game it gets stuck, no matter how much time do I wait.

(Variantes is lines in spanish)

Anyway I'm more interested on game review, it was sweet when it worked well sad.png

I think some positions are quick almost instant and some take 25 seconds for feedback. Even if it’s a blunder since depth two it’ll still take 25 seconds sometimes. Maybe you wanna plug in 40 moves in a game and you may have to be waiting for 20 minutes or so to review that one game with feedback on great

Nnnnneeeedddd

yh, I'm analysing a game atm, and it's still kinda slow. I think I wanted it to work so bad, I got over excited lol

FavelaSwagKing

Ya no I’ve already been there where I was like they fixed it awesome! But it was just a simple position

On my older PC running the latest version of Chrome on Windows 10 (32 bit) with 4 GB memory, I see similar wait times for the Feedback in Analysis.

I also see similar wait times when I access the Mobile web site using Chrome on my Android Tablet (32 bit) with 2 GB memory.

On my newer PC running Windows 11 (64 bit) with 8 GB memory, the Feedback in Analysis is displayed in a few seconds, and I see the same quick response for the Feedback in Analysis when using my Android Tablet using the Chesscom Mobile App.

In Game Review, the Retry Move only takes a few seconds to display Feedback, on all my devices.

What are the specs of your PC that you are using to access Chesscom?

i9-9900k + 32GB RAM

Chrome latest / Firefox latest, Windows 10 latest / Ubuntu 22.04 (all combinations of OS and browser)

First three moves or so are OK (not fast but OK) but impossible to get 4th or 5th to work.

I see from your previous post, the problem you are experiencing is with Game Review. Is that correct? Are you also experience slow FeedBack display in the Analysis Tab?

The Game Review analysis is served to your PC from Chesscom servers. How is your network connection to Chesscom? Can you run a Windows command tracert chess.com and show us the output?
