Help! Can't get rid of message alerts.

Hi, whenever I receive a new message or alert, a little red "1" appears in the top left-hand corner, beside the Chess.com logo. That's fine, but when I read the message, the alert disappears only temporarily. The next time I open a page, the alert (along with the little red "1") has re-appeared. Here's a screen shot of the alert, still there after multiple attempts to get rid of it:

How can I make this disappear? It sounds like a minor point but the little red warning sign is really distracting (and I can't afford any distractions - my concentration is bad enough as it is!) I've tried clicking "clear all" but that, too, only works temporarily. Does anyone know how to get rid of this annoying glitch?

Use the bug reporting tool to report it.

Thanks, good advice.

Is it a message?......or a "challenge".?   A message would go away with "clear all".......a challenge has to be answered with an acceptance or a decline.......I think?  Did you ignore a friend request?

haroldschris

Thanks. It's a challenge but I can't seem to accept it or decline it. I've even asked the person who made the challenge to withdraw it but he can't - it seems already to have elapsed at his end. It's all very weird. Someone has suggested clearing my cache, so I'll try that, but I'm not optimistic, because it seems to be an issue on all platforms and all browsers.

haroldschris

Thanks for your help. I did try that but it doesn't seem to have worked. I reckon it's some kind of glitch. It's now telling me that I have no alerts and yet simultaneously putting up that irritating red "1" sign. It's weird how such a minor and inconsequential problem can be so annoying! But like I say, I very much appreciate your help and advice. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on feminism too! Controversial, but interesting. Keep it up!

" It's now telling me that I have no alerts and yet simultaneously putting up that irritating red "1" sign. It's weird how such a minor and inconsequential problem can be so annoying!"               LOL.  Be grateful its not happening in an airplane cockpit.

Good point! Perspective!

Nonetheless, just to demonstrate that I'm not hallucinating (or that, if I am, it's worse than I thought) here's a screen shot of what I'm talking about. Note that it says, at one and the same time, both that I have an alert (as indicated by the aforementioned red "1" sign) and that I have "no alerts"! Go figure!

I'm afraid it's way deeper than refreshing the browser. Not only does that not work, you can uninstall and reinstall your browser, in fact your entire operating system, and it won't make any difference. I had the alert on every browser I used (namely Explorer, Chrome, Safari and Opera). It also remained regardless of whether I was using a Mac or a PC, or even a phone. I tried clearing the cache (as recommended by tech support) and again, nothing.

Essentially, the problem has to be resolved at chess.com's end. Nothing else will make any difference. Unless they get their tech support to actually take action, the problem will remain. Eventually, after weeks and weeks of correspondence with them, and the sort of suggestions mentioned above ("refresh your browser", "clear your cache", "try another browser", "try a different platform" etc), none of which made any difference, they finally accepted that the issue was not at my end but at theirs. And they fixed it instantly. But getting them to the point where they realised that the underlying cause was at their end took a very, very long time.

Thanks, interesting stuff. I'll take those very useful points on board the next time the problem recurs. (Which I have a feeling it will - it's happened multiple times already).

I'm still having a similar issue, where I read the notification and when I refresh the page it just comes back.  Its the same one each time too, a friend request I accepted a while ago.

And it definitely went through that I accepted them because they are on my friends list.

haroldschris

Yes, and it seems to afflict the app too. Really annoying. Try sending a message to the help team. They're not very fast but they do usually get round to replying eventually, and sometimes even give some actual help!

SeismicSandwich

Yea, they app still tells me its my turn in a daily chess game that ended on time 4 years ago.

are you in chess.com beta

2023, still here. Nobody seemed to reported this bug, so I did. Nothing will happen, Chess.com does obviously does not care about the issue and it's obviously THEIR issue.
The problem does NOT always sit a half meter away from the screen, as proven with this.

June 2023. Just spent 20 mins trying everything to get that "1" to go away.

It started with a chat message. I've deleted the chat message multiple times but now it returns seconds after I delete it.

Seriously? From 2018 this problem hasn't been fixed?

My subscription is up for renewal in August. I wonder how well the Lichess subscription site works. Looks like I'm going to find out if they don't fix this annoyance.

Just accepted a challenge five times because the notification won't disappear. Thought maybe the other party challenged me multiple times but that's not it. I've now started five games with them. Refreshing still does not work. Irrationally angering little nuisance this.

I also have the same problem

I believe that's a known issue but after accepting one, clicking the decline option should get it to go away.
