How do I choose Black when playing against a human?

And what happens if they want Black?

Oh, no Chat or Voice is active.

You can only choose color in Live games by playing unrated games.

Sorry to be a pain but I'm new to Chess.com...

RE: "You can only choose color in Live games by playing unrated games."

"live"  - aren't ALL games with humans live?  so this would ALWAYS be true!?

"unrated" - I don't know what this means. Doesn't everyone get a rating once they start playing games? How do I tell if I'm rated or unrated?

I tried setting up a Live Custom game with Rating set to "unrated" BUT there is no obvious button to select the Black pieces???

I always get White.

Any help appreciated.

No worries, these are the kinds of questions I would have had a few months ago.

Live games have short time controls from a few minutes to an hour or so for the whole game. Daily games have from 3 to 14 days for one move!

A rated game calculates your estimated skill over many games. When you set up a match, you can choose whether or not to start a rated game.

Aaaah I finally worked out the problem.

The choice of Black or White was at the bottom of the Custom window and not visible to me, as it was "off my screen".
I found it by accident when I scrolled all the way down.

Works fine now.

I am finding that Chess.com web site does not work very well for me.  Very cluttered and lots of strange problems.

Perhaps it hasn't been tested very well under Safari under MacOS?

Anyway thanks very much dmc and martin_stahl.
