How do I promote a variation to the main line?

In old forum threads I see references to the ability to promote a variation you made in the analysis section of this site to be the main line of your study. I can't seem to find that option. So, does anybody know how to turn a variation into the main line?

When analyzing, right click on the variation and select "Promote".

It looks like that option isn't always there. I can't quite put my finger on when it is. What do I do if that option doesn't appear?

Where are you on the site where it's not appearing for you?

In analysis on my MacBook using Chrome. I've made an analysis of an opening with lots of variations.

Should I be more specific and post the entire analysis (how?) with a reference to a specific place where I don't see the option?

That might help.  Honestly, I'm at a loss.  Every analysis screen I've gone through has allowed me to right-click on a variation move and hit "Promote".  So I'm not exactly sure what is going on from your end.

The analysis is below. As you can see above, the option to promote isn't there when I right click on the variation 7. dxe4

Thank you for the screenshot and example.  I think I know what is going on.  You are analyzing using the Library, right?  It looks like it is impossible to promote a variation to the main line in the Library.

In the Library, you can make variations Move Up and Move Down but it can't overwrite what the main line is - because the Library is primarily used to store and notate actual games, and I can understand why it was set up so that the actual moves played in the game can't be overwritten by promoting a variation.

BulletHole13

I'm not sure what you're saying. This wasn't an actual game. I made every mode here in analysis, starting from scratch. Other variations WILL show the option to be promoted to the main line. Just not all of them, which I find weird.

BulletHole13

Here I do have the option to promote.

eee001

I've had the same problem too, is this a chess.com bug? I was just inputting analysis for some openings I was studying and it won't let me promote some moves.

bioniclime4

Some problem.  No option to promote a line.  Extremely annoying.

John-Konway

Same problem, please fix.

CrissCrossAppleGG

I figured it out. The promote option disappears when you re-edit your "saved" analysis. That is, you can't promote anything to the main line once your analysis is saved. You also cannot add anything to the main line after it's saved, so any extra move will only appear as a variation in the parentheses.
