How to explore a "line" in game analysis?

Sort:

When analyzing a game/position, we get some suggestions of moves up to a defined depth, right? I'd like to know if there is an easy way to see the whole line in sequence. If I move my cursor over the move 10, 11, or 12, I can see a miniature of the board:

However, if I click in any of those moves, I can't go forward (just backward). I imagine there must be a way to explore each line more easily than having to click in the final move (say 20) and then return to the move I wanted to start from (say 13).

When analyzing key moments of an archived game, I can do something like that by clicking "Be6 is best", for instance, I can just click in the right arrow and see the following moves.

In summary, I would like to find an easier way to analyze positions using just the arrows.

Any help is appreciated.

Kind regards.

From any position, the lines are only going to show to a certain depth. You can click the final move in a line to add it as a variation, then the engine will look forward from that move.

Hi, Martin. Thanks for your quick answer.

I do realize that, however, I'm not trying to analyze a deeper depth, just a couple of moves after the lines suggested by the engine. Let's use the following example:

Computer shows the following lines:

  • -2.37 11... Re8 12. Rfd1 Rc5 13. Rac1 Rec8 14. Ra1 Ne4 15. h3 Re8 16. Kh2 Nc3 17. Rd3 Re4 18. Nd4 Kf8 19. Nb3 Rcc4 20. Nd2 Red4 21. Nxc4 Rxd3 22. Ne5 Rd2 23. Nc6
  • -2.28 11... Rc5 12. Rfd1 Ne4 13. h3 Re8 14. Kh2 Kf8 15. Nd4 Nc3 16. Rd2 Re4 17. Rd3 Rc4 18. Nf3 Nxa4 19. Nd2 Rcd4 20. Rxd4 Rxd4 21. Nf3 Re4
  • -1.99 11... Rd8 12. Rfc1 Rc5 13. Ne5 Ne4 14. Nc6 Rxc1+ 15. Rxc1 Rd7 16. Ne5 Rb7 17. Nc6 Rc7 18. Rd1 Nc3 19. Ra1 a5 20. Kf2 Rd7 21. Ke3 Ne4 22. Ra3 Kf8 23. Kd4 Nc5

If I click on move 15 in any of those lines, I can't use the right arrow of the keyboard to advance to movement 16, 17, 18, and so on. I can only use the left arrow to see previous moves. That works differently as the analysis of archived games - using the tab "Moments". If I were analyzing the same line in such a tab, I would be able to use both arrows (left and right) to see previous and next moves - which makes it way easier for me (a beginner) to understand and compare the line of thought.

Please let me know if I made it clearer now - not being a native English speaker, I do admit I feel I'm not managing to be very clear.

U must click the last move of the line, when u click on between it only shows the line till the move u clicked.

Hope this helps!

I haven't looked recently, but the situation is likely the same. Click the last move to add the line to the analysis and you'll be able to look at the whole variation up to that move and the analysis will continue to calculate past that while on that last move.

Clicking on the last move of the line is better than nothing, but this is a really dumb implementation in game analysis.

When a line is shown with an evaluation number, the user should be able to click on that evaluation number and traverse the remainder of the line.

The engine should not continue calculating, but simply show the line as previously calculated.

This has been an annoyance for years!

I agree! I wish we could explore to the end of the depth at least and just have it stop there
