I figured it out. It appears that all these variants operate on a separate server-like database. You can only search/find your friends if they are actively on chess.com/variants for that specific game.
How to invite friends to play variants, such as Duck Chess?

I can't seem to invite friends to play against me in duck chess on the desktop site. We are both playing on computer as well.
It doesn't seem to be working for any variants not immediately listed on the dropdown. If I click the "More Variants", it will only let me type in a name to challange... but my friends are not showing up.
Anybody know the solution?
