I lost rating points in a winning positon when I got disconnected

I just recently lost rating points in a winning position.  It was my opponents turn when I was disconnected and he was not making his move.  He sat there without making a move for 5 minutes and I got disconnected and it resigned me.  I lost rating points.  This is unfair and he should not be winning points and I should not be losing them.

hi!

What most likely happened is that your opponent made a move, but because you lost contact with the server it never relayed the move to you. So on your screen it showed as if your opponents time was ticking down.

But if i had a winning position and over 20 minutes to win then I should not have lost rating points this is unfair and shouldn't be happening.

There is zero guarantee that you would have converted your winning position. Every day thousands of winning positions are lost or drawn, that's just the nature of chess happy.png

So you lost , how many?

10 points?

So you would be at 1178 instead of 1168.

Man ,that's a disaster of unimaginable proportions.

How do you cope with this?It really needs nerves of steel and strong personality.

I envy you.

It isn't about the amount of points it is the fact that I lost points when it should have been win.  I should have won points in this game.  This isn't a joke so please cut the sarcasm.  This is the help forum I am reporting something that happened that no one wants to happen in there games.  It is people like me that are helping make chess.com better.  The admins should be aware of this issue and engines should be added to bring consideration of position evaluation, possible tactics, and time left on clock in a situation where a player is disconnected.  This would make chess.com a lot better since a player who is disconnected has a winning position and is up on time wouldn't be losing the game.

the real issue that he is reporting is that the server treated him unfairly. It's a design flaw and he was trying to report it as a bug in my opinion. the server should check how long it's been since the opponent has moved. and compare it to since it last heard from you. and if it's an influx in time. in this case ~5 minutes If the server can still find you and not the opponent that is a win for the player that is still connected. You would be able to tell who lost connection. first and then decide a winner. I don't know how chess.com does this check. and I have not even played a love game on here but that's how I saw the original post.

It does happen but technically, it goes in your opponent's favor. He may have been simply using his thinking time for that period. So if you didn't reconnect in the time you were given, all justice point him as the winner.

The basic answer to  the OP's complain is: Shit happens!  Meditate on DiedreSkye's posts and get over it.

I am just suggesting that when a situation where a disconnection occurs the following should be considered.  position, possible moves, time on clock, time opponent has been not moving, the internet connection, and computer evaluation of previous moves.  And I never said anything about me be the winner but for the server to be fair about the situation and call it a draw or allow the two players to agree to continue playing once the player has reconnected.  I can't help it if I get disconnected.  I should have won that game.  It doesn't matter about rating no player of any strength should be treated this way.  My way is the fair way.

FortunaMajor

Evaluating the game position for every disconnected would be really difficult, (if possible at all) and impractical. Also, it may prove to be an incentive for players who have a superior position at one point against a better opponent to 'disconnect and win'.

The sarcasm is because you don't realise that your suggestion is irrational.

Having a winning position doesn't mean you will win.

So anyone who has a winning position just turns off the modem , loses connection and the system awards him the victory.

Does that sound reasonable to you?

So in an OTB tournament , I have a winning position , I say I have a headache ,I  can't play and the arbiter must "award" me the victory.

Dooes that sound reasonable to you?

So  understand this.

In chess , victory is not awarded , you earn it.

If you don't earn then you don't deserve it.

You were disconnected. In on line chess that is defeat. In OTB  if you leave the tournament hall and don't return in time it's defeat.Everybody knows it , everybody respects it.

Read the rules , if you don't like them , play another game. The rules aren't going to change , especially not the reasonable ones.

You are comparing getting disconnected with leaving the playing hall.  I did not leave the game I was logged in and looking right at the board and my opponents time was ticking down and I see a message on the side of the screen say that I have been disconnected and will auto resign.  When I checked back at the game later when I was auto resigned it showed me that it was still my opponents move when it resigned me.   I was on the game and ready to make my move.  This should have been at least a draw.

Woe is me.  I lost some rating points in a chess game, and now I'm all blue inside.  There's only one thing that can make me feel better.  I'm going to eat a whole pint of chocolate ice cream!

FortunaMajor

Disconnection does not necessarily mean lost. Sometimes a network fluke is possible, and that's precisely why Chess.com has a fixed period of time for reconnection.

Hope you don't play too many games in a day. You will catch a cold from eating too many ice cream.

FortunaMajor

@hansensong, that's really rude and abusive. Delete that comment or I will report you to the staff.

Happens to me in plenty of games I swear they are doing it purposely

You're not my mother!  She has passed along to her final reward in the choir of angels.  If being a full-grown, supposedly mature adult means anything at all, it means I can eat as much ice cream as I want.

oregonpatzer

You got it, sister.  I have a five cubic foot chest freezer from Wal-Mart in my storeroom full of ice cream, the most excellent "Three Twins" brand.  How much ice cream do you have in your storeroom?

Many years ago, I used to practice law in a medium-sized city in the California wine country.  Our premium, upscale supermarket would hold "single's night" once a month, with tables of free food, helium balloons, etc., and singles on the make would prowl the aisles like cats.  My favorite trick was to go up to a pretty girl, take a deep draught of helium and ask her in my best Donald Duck voice "Why can't I be rich as well as good looking?"  I never got any girlfriends out of this, but I regularly got new clients for my law firm.  You would be surprised how many pretty girls need a lawyer, right now!
