In some posts I have seen people put in illegal moves. I am trying to figure out how to do this but can't find out. Could someone please help me?

Thanks

NinjaBear

It's a secret.

I personally do not know how to do this but I suspect it has to do with manually editing the PGN or FEN text.

When I went to the analysis board, I checked OFF the button "enforce legal moves." Then I was able to move the pieces illegally on the board and create a game, but it turned out as just a diagram when I tried to post it.

The simplest way to insert an illegal PGN is simply to copy the "Move List" directly from a finished game and paste it as a PGN file on the "Insert Game" option on the forum.

Could you please make it simple to understand (step by step instructions)? I am  new to the site.

Wow.  Someone should really master this art and create an amusing, story-driven story of some whacked-out chess game!

You'll have to know either how to write chess notation or have a program that will let you make illegal moves that you can use to copy and paste the game info from (PGN).

The simplest to explain is just to know the notation.  Lets say you want white to move his knight out to the middle of the board on the first move, black's king will jump out to capture the knight, and white castles queenside through his pieces.  You would go to insert a game like normal and it will give you three options.  Choose "Game or sequence of moves" and you will be here:

In that box, type 1.Nge4 Kxe4 2. 0-0-0

It's important that you specify which knight by saying Nge4 and not just Ne4.

Now finish inserting the diagram as normal.  Click continue, next step, insert etc.

This is what the game will look like.

For a crazy looking game you can copy a normal game, and after pasting all the moves into the "Use a PGN file" box, simply delete the first move.  It will look something like this:

To copy a game's PGN you click one of the bottom three buttons in the game window.

Wow. What a nice, handy little instruction packet you made Wafflemaster.  Can you make waffles as good as you can explain odd chess tricks?

Thanks a lot Wafflemaster!

I just have one more question: what if you want to start the game from a game position?

Above where you paste the PGN (the moves of the game) you would have to describe the position in FEN notation and put it in brackets.

This example shows FEN and PGN the way it might look when you're done doing it.

[FEN "rnbqkbnr/p4ppp/1pppp3/8/2PPP3/8/PP3PPP/RNBQKBNR b KQkq - 0 1"]

1... f6 2. f3 g6 3. g3 h6 4. h3

You can wiki FEN to see how it's done.  Basically orient a board with white on bottom, then read across each row as if it were a book (from right to left, moving from top to bottom).  Notice each rank is divided by a slash, the lower case letters are a black piece, upper case is white, and a number denotes the number of empty squares between them.

It's actually pretty simple after you learn it.

Faster in any case would be to download a free viewer like winboard (which I use).  You can use it to set up positions, and make moves.  When you're done you can copy the game and starting position to your clipboard, and when you paste it into a chess.com game insert-er it's all ready to go.

Oh thanks wafflemaster. I was forgetting to put the FEN in brackets.

Thanks to everyone! Now I know how to do it.

By the way wafflemaster, how did you put all those pictures and stuff in post #9???
