See my flag, now I change it to Catalonia

alex_girona

oh, ok. Thanks for that. I didn't realise I could choose Catalonia. I think I automatically got marked Spain on my profile when I signed up so I assumed I could not choose. I will change it then. Topic closed.

I'm ALSO a Catalan and I wouldn't want my flag to be changed into the Catalan one. I'm a Spaniard above all. That'd be just ridiculous: Catalonia is NOT a member state of the United Nations, it does NOT have a permanent seat at the organization. If chess.com webmasters want this to be kind of a circus, then why aren't we allowed to have, for instance, also a Vall d'Aran "national flag" (look upon the Inet to know more about this special & regional place precisely in Catalonia, Spain, whith a language -as they say- even recognised by Catalonian-Spanish regulations).

alex_girona

What a ridiculous and manipulative comment, Juanan. If you do indeed live in Catalonia, as you seem to imply, you will know that Catalonia is a centuries-old nation with its own language, culture, traditions, customs, etc. Just as an example for other people who may be reading this forum, Spaniards celebrate Christmas on the 24th, whereas Catalans celebrate it on the 25th; Easter is celebrated by Catalans on the Friday and Monday, whereas Spaniards celebrate it on the Thursday and Friday. We may not be officially a "country" or a "state", but that does not mean we are not a full identity equal to a Danish identity or a French identity (language + culture + customs, etc.).  I am grateful that Chess.com allows expressing my identity with the Catalan flag. If I were forced to place a Spanish flag next to my user name, that would feel so alien as being forced to place a French flag. Also, a Spanish flag makes people assume Spanish is my language, which it is absolutely not. I amb able to speak Spanish, yes, but that does not make it MY language. The same way I am ABLE to speak French.

Really disapointed i saw a catalonian flag?? are we crazy? catalonia is not a country and it neverwas like alex try to obscure people ,it never was  , just another region like galicia or basque country, they have also their own traditions , its doesnt mean they are a country, i would like to know who made this error maybe intencionally by the catalan lobby, very mad chess.com.

Barcelona won't win any thropies for at least 2 seasons, apart from this year's Copa del Rey...

Sorry I couldn't resist!

We do understand that chess.com is not a mechenaism by which nation states are officially recognized, right?  The flags here, rather, are simply a means of self identification?

If someone identifies as a Spaniard first and Catalonian second then by all means they are free to use the Spanish flag.  Alternatively, the Catalonian flag is there for those that self identify the other way around.

TheGrobe

Now, where is the Cascadian flag?

TheGrobe

How 'bout a beer?  Or a hop cone?  I could get behind that.

Pulpofeira

What is "Cascadian"?

alex_girona

The area of present-day Catalonia used to be, for all practical purposes, the equivalent of what we nowadays understand as a "country", i.e. in a time when there were no countries but rather kingdoms, there used to be a Kingdom called the Kingdom of Aragon. This kingdom was exclusively Catalan-speaking and is the reason we still have a distinct language and distinct cultural identity (some examples: we celabrate Christmas on the 25th, whereas Spaniards on the 24th; also we celebrate Easter on the Friday and Monday, whereas Spaniards on the Thursday and Friday). Whether Catalonia, which is a nation, should become a nation-state is open to debate. What is not open to debate is the fact that the Catalan identity exists and has existed for centuries. So as a Catalan, I do not feel identified with Spanish culture or even the Spanish language. I am able to speak Spanish, the same way as I am able to speak German, but that does not make it my language. Your language is always the language you feel at home with. In my case Catalan.

alex_girona

(the above comment was meant for mercho, who was questioning the validity of having a Catalan flag for Catalan chess.com users)

Pulpofeira

Although I don't feel very concerned about this topic, I absolutely agree with alex.
