What are Ladder tournaments/ladder chess???????????

eh usually people set out first day according to strength/rating! Set out in numbers 1,2,3....etc

then usually you can challenge people within a range of usually 2 people above you but no more! Then if you win (and only win) you swap positions with them on the ladder. So if number 10 challenges number 8 and wins then they swap places on the ladder so now number 10 is now number 8.

Also you cant reject challenges to keep your spot as admin will kill you or just kick you from ladder. Also some other terms where you have to play atleast 1 every time period.

A Ladder tournament is just another way of organizing games between players. 

Normal tournaments have a specific number of players (sometimes divided up into groups of a certain size) where everybody plays everybody (within their group) until there is only one person left and that player is the winner of the tournament.

Ladder Tournaments on the other hand have no "winner" and no "end."  It is a perpetual string of challenges from one player to another as they fight for position on the ladder.  The goal is always to climb to the top of the ladder, but how you get their varies greatly from ladder to ladder.  Skeptikill gave a few examples of some rules a tournament director may come up with, but like I said, every ladder is different.
