Lag, it's a problem

For the short time I have been playing on Chess.com I have noticed considerable lag during Live Chess play. From everything I have read, others are experiencing the same issue, this seems to be an onoing issue which seems to be falling on deaf ears.

I have a broadband connection that is hard wired, there is no reason to experience the amount of lag I do on a regular basis. For example, the lag is so bad that moving my pieces seems as if it's in ultra slow motion and my connection bar shows red (bad connection.) I've tried other browsers and it makes no difference. I suspect this problem has everything to do with Chess.com's lack of server power. Chinsing on bandwidth in order to keep your profit margin high isn't going to win you any new customers. I've read a post where a guy is a premium subscriber and still experiences horrible lag in Live Chess play. Who's in charge, why is this acceptable as a company policy? You sure won't be getting any of my money with lag this bad. If I were heading your company this would be a priority on my things to address. Lag = poor customer experience = no customer. Simple equation.

Could be something relatively simple as mentioned in this article:

In other words... it's anything but Chess.com's fault, no? I'm not using a USB wifi adapter, I have a wired connection that I play PS4 and PC games on constantly with an excellent connection. I have no viruses on my computer as I always have an anti-virus program running, it's up to date and I have a hardware firewall running. I also run anti-malware programs on a regular basis. My notebook is plenty fast with an i5 3.0Ghz and 8GB memory. The fact is, this site is a memory hog and consumes far too much memory, likely a result of Chess.com's unholy alliance with ads.

Mind you, I realize this a free site with milllions of users and there has to be a trade off somewhere. But the constant lag on this particular site, it's worse than any other I have personally experienced. Excusing away the problem by listing a laundry list of "could be" problems is, well, to be honest, not very believeable. The problem, in my opinion, likely lies with Chess.com and their lack of server bandwidth. It seems their Java implemetation of their Chess Live application is severely inefficient and their lack of attention to the complaints made by others in the past seems to be passing the buck. That's just my opinion of course. Anyhoot, it's getting to the point that playing on this site is more of an annoyance than a pleasure. Being that it is free I suppose my options are pretty clear, go elsewhere. And it seems that that might just be what I'll have to do.

I knew I should have put a "please don't shoot the messenger" disclaimer on that post....Laughing  If folks as knowledgable as you are having trouble with the site, that goes a long way towards explaining why Erik is going for a leaner meaner version of the site with the long delayed V3.  Normally, "decontenting" a site doesn't seem like a sound business strategy, but I guess that's what he has to do.  I don't have any real knowledge of computers, but this whole browser based concept always seemed a little fishy to me.  What's so wrong with client based software?  It seems to work for most sites.  Anyway, sorry your experiences here haven't been the best.  I use the site mostly for it's educational resources and the odd correspondence chess game, so lag is pretty much a nonissue for me.  V3 might fix everything...

Yes, i don't know why it lags and I have to resign always! Then I lose points!

Unni05

What is version we are running?

If I am not lagging, and if I live in Norway, and have 110 ms, how is it chess.com's fault?

LeoRising

The lag is ridiculous on here...never used to be like that but it's becoming unplayable. As above - I have an excellent connection but lag which ruins every game. Same on Firefox as Chrome - running all the latest Java stuff...

adumbrate

Thats probably because your computer is slow, I am not lagging

LeoRising

Nothing to do with the computer - read my post. It NEVER used to be like that - don't get out much in Norway do you...?

ironage

ok... today is 9th July and the lag is unstandable... how ppl would like to have a subscrption ($$)  if they are loosing points and games??

I've been here in this site for almost 2 years, but Im thinking on leaving it, its simple unplayable

vmnhrd

the problem seems to have no solution. i find that i have "resigned" when i am doing well, there is lag, suddenly i have lost time when its the other guy's turn; and so on. makes it frustrating for a guy who plays to have fun and to relax. please do something.

Welcome to the club.

Just tried to play live with broadband cable and then wifi on different computers and experienced the same appalling lag causing me to lose points.

Just paid for a years membership, this is not funnyYell

The thing is, anything can cause the lag when it happens. The link baddogno posted give some examples.

A router/hop between your ISP and chess.com servers could be experiencing problems. The site could have the best servers and massive and fas bandwidth and people still could see lag from things outside of control of the site.

Bye.

You must be a Chess.com website tech, "bye" is your be-all answer to legitimate frustrations? I'd love for you to come to me with a problem, any problem, my sardonic answer would be, bye.

I have found the lag on chess.com no where near as bad now as it was three years ago. On FICS, OTOH, it often seems that everyone is using a lag switch to gain a few extra seconds.

Chess.com just get rid of ads. NO-ONE THINKS THEY ARE A GOOD THING. No one looks at the Ads to see what's on offer. EVERYONE VIEWS THEM AS A PEST.

If Chess.com is a home, Ads are cockroaches crawling over the floor.

The very fact that people HAVE TO HAVE ADS FOISTED UPON THEM, tells you something about how popular they are. Under their own volition, people will avoid advertising. What is the crude solution for the marketer? Make them unavoidable to people. Make their viewing mandatory. Make them as invasive as possible. Caveman marketing. Do everyone a favour Chess.com and forfeit whatever money you are making from ads and just kick them out altogether.

Martin_Stahl

Apparently enough revenue is generated by the ads that they keep them.

dannyp215

Yeah but they compromise too much - such as their integrity for one, and perhaps their server speed hence the lag issues
