Hi all,

My dad and I just signed up here so we can play online; however, I cannot seem to be able to find him while doing member search, nor can he find me. We both activated our accounts, and I can see other people in the search... help!

my account name: DmitriStupak

my dad's: SergeStupak

I don't see either one of you as a result when I do a member search, whether I specify "Canada" or "all countries".  There may be some sort of delay before you show up when a new account is created, but more likely it's not going to get better.  The member search function on chess.com has a well-deserved reputation as being essentially useless.  There's no predicting on which occasions it's going to work or which members it might find when it does work.

Easy solution. Have him post here and then you can use the link on his post to add him to your friends and challenge him and he can do the same with you.

http://www.chess.com/members/view/yourfather'susername will get you to his homepage, and you can challenge him to a game there.

DmitriStupak

thank you all!!

By the way, Dmitri, welcome to chess.com!  And greetings to your Dad too.

New members can take a few hours or so to enter the system.  A good alternate way is to send a challenge with options you select

http://www.chess.com/echess/create_game.html

And then enter their username or email address

One problem with Member Search is that it only searches through member's REAL NAMES - not their LOGIN NAMES.

That's not the case in my experience. I justed checked and I could search by login name.

You're quite right. It has to be EXACT MATCH against either first name, second name or login name.

paul211 wrote: art by EXAT MATCH you likely mean with the capitals or small letters in the name, right? And if not what is an exact match?

On the other hand I copied both names in the member search under the top heading drop menu on my home page at the Member search under Members and got these 2 results:

1. For serge:  http://www.chess.com/members/search.html?name=SergeStupak&country=

2. For DmitriStupak:http://www.chess.com/members/search.html?name=DmitriStupak&country=

Not THAT exact! I meant that all of the characters in either - the first name, second name or login name - must be specified.

So if you search for serge, you find

First Name

Second Name

Serge

Serge

Ostrovski

Serge-Jorg

Serge

Serge-Jorg

mushserge

Mush

Serge

 but you DON'T find

First Name

Second Name

sergeant

chris

kitchens

since serge is only a partial match for sergeant.

Perhaps chess.com could allow for a member search the wildcard options, the one to their discretion, to facilitate finding of a member when a person has only a few characters of the name they are looking for.

....

Erik has already ruled that out - in another discussion ... member-search---how-to-improve-it) - ...

It is REALLY painful to do a search like "and" and then get results like "andy", "randy", "hand". How painful? Like bring-the-site-down painful. We can do it where you search for "and" and get "andy", "andrew", "andover". But not just anywhere in the name.

On the top left you will see a search magnifying glass. click on it then type in your dad's member name, then it will search and you will see under members is your dad's account. I have done this and I have secured it. Now go do it

Did you look at the dates on this thread? You're giving orders to a guy who hasn't logged on in almost 7 years. And the father's most recent login was more than 5 years ago.

Help!  Am accessing www.chess.com from an older (legacy) iMac (Model iMac4,i) and cannot upgrade my OS beyond Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I am able to sign in and can access and solve the Daily Puzzle, but when I try to access the Tactics drills so as to increase my Tactics Rating, I depress the Return Key but am left with a black screen; no chessboard, no tactics, nothing, nada.  How can I access the older version of www.chess.com, which I have used on this same iMac platform in previous months with a lot of enjoyment. Any advice on how to contact the S&T management support at www.chess.com HQs?

Is there a 1-800 telephone number?  Many thanks for any suggestions.

Just shows you that if you quit too early, you'll never find the answer that you're looking for. Life lesson, folks.

LOL-- that 7-year gap just about accounts for how long it took chess.com to roll out V3 with the search fix. Cool
