Hi all

I was going through all the openings in openning db but could not understand the "ECO" field in the table. What does the ECO field value signifies???? And also i was tring to search all the openings with the first move as 'g3' but was unsucessful. Can anyone please help me with this???

Thanks, Saurabh

I take it you have launched Game Explorer, perhaps by LEARN -> Game Explorer. By default, it is set to the Master Games Database.

Now you either make the move g3 by dragging the piece in the usual way. Or you can click on 1.g3. Either way, the board will be updated. It will tell you that this is the A00: Hungarian Opening. The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings [ECO] code is the A00. "Hungarian Opening" is the Descriptive Name". Now Game Explorer will show you the responses for Black that it has in its Master Games database.

The ECO scheme is described in wikipedia   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopaedia_of_Chess_Openings

This lighthearted discussion (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/eco-abandoned) mentions alternatives.

ECO stands for "Encyclopedia of Chess Openings" and it's one way to categorize what opening was used in a particular game.

  • A1 1.c4 ...: English
  • A2 1.c4 e5: King's English
  • A3 1.c4 c5: English, Symmetrical

If you want to search for all games beginning with 1.g3, do not use ECO codes for this. A move or position search is the better way to go about that.
