Am I ignorant to some rule about pawns taking pawns? In my most previous game, you can see what I’m referring to. A pawn moves forward taking my pawn even though it started directly beside it. Not at a slant. I aborted the game out of frustration.

I feel like we should have a sticky on this subject.

It’s a legal move, called en passant. If after your opponent advances their pawn two squares forward, it ends up on a square directly next to your pawn... you can capture their pawn by moving your pawn forward diagonally as usual. You can only capture en passant on the very next move, after that, you can’t do it anymore.

You’re basically capturing their pawn as if they only moved ONE square forward. The idea is, if advancing your pawn one square forward would have allowed your opponent to capture it, moving it two forward doesn’t save you. In other words, you can’t move your pawn two squares forward to avoid getting captured.
