Plain board

Hello!

There´s probably a really easy answer to this:

I´m reading a chess book and would like to analyze and follow the games in the book with a board. Is there anywhere on the site just a plain chessboard where you can set up any position?

Thanks in advance,

You can probably just use game explorer:

http://www.chess.com/explorer/

You could also insert a game into a blank post or blog entry by clicking on the  icon.  Then you could cancel it.  Don't know why you'd want to do it that way but I thought I'd mention it. :)

Yes, but if you want to start from a certain position? I thought that in the Explorer you always have to start from the beginning position.

Ah, so you mean just a blank board to move pieces onto.

I don't know of anything here, other than the second option I gave you.  When you click that  button, you can create a puzzle.   This will give you a board that you can clear off (except for the Kings) and put whatever pieces on you want, and then move around.  Maybe you can create these in messages sent to yourself?

Not a very graceful solution but it would work unless somebody has another answer.

Thanks Dave,

Perhaps the easiest would be to download a free chess program from the internet and use that. Or, if one wants to be really daring, use a REAL BOARD!

You could always download Arena. There's one that comes zipped with a bunch of good engines including Rybka 2.2n2 for free. That's probably your best bet.

Your best best is to buy chessmaster 9 which you can now get for $9.99  There you can set up any position.

I was doing some stuff with a real board at home, and felt really spoiled becuase I wished I could just click a button to "reset" it.

That costs money. Arena is free.

Whenever I want to do something like that, I just open Live Chess. There's a board there that shows up when you don't have any game going. You can do anything you want with that board.

I do that sometimes, but you can't put pieces back on the board except to go all the way back before you captured them. Other than that, it works well.
