Purchasing a membership via PayPal -- Credit Card number still being requested

As soon as I choose the option to make my payment through PayPal on https://www.chess.com/checkout/cart.html , it, as expected, redirects me to PayPal's website where I'm prompted to log in. Upon logging in, I'm prompted to enter credit card information, and get this message: "To complete your purchase, please add a new credit card or debit card."

At the bottom of the PayPal page soliciting credit card info, I have the option to: "Cancel and return to payment methods." After clicking cancel I can select PayPal Balance or eCheck as funding options. I have more than sufficient funds in both my paypal account and my bank account to cover a month's worth of a platinum chess.com membership, BUT no matter if I choose eCheck or PayPal Balance, I'm STILL redirected to that same page requesting credit card info. I've been through this process 6 times now and nothing changes.

What's the deal?

Think this probem is inherent to PayPal & I should submit this question to customer service on their side? Or does Chess.com specifically NOT accept payments from PayPal balances, but instead only credit & debit submitted via PayPal? Did I overlook that part somewhere LOL?

erik

this is certainly a problem on paypal's side. this isn't something we have specified. have you tried contacting paypal?

LottoHSV

Well, I couldn't have a balance with them in the first place without giving them access to my bank account. It's got bank account access. I just don't even own a credit card.

I'll try contacting PayPal sometime, I guess, per Erik's suggestion

Send me with all your bank details and a copy of your birth certificate, I'll take care of it for you. Laughing

Yes, PayPal will not let you spend your stored balance without having an alternate funding source attached. I think the correct order of events is that they have sending limits for different categories of accounts - and when you verify the account by adding the CC, you go in a different category. This happened to me too. It's very strange, because you'd think that the stored balance should be able to be spent regardless of all else, right?

I don't know your exact issue - if it's offering you an eCheck as a payment possibility, presumably your bank account is already attached to your PP account. Typically they don't require you to have both a bank and a cc attached. Many people, fyi, use a CC as a funding source because of the consumer protections inherent to those financial instruments.

Without knowing more about your specific situation, I would recommend that you add the cc as paypal requests. If you want to message me with more questions that's ok.

Oh you're a sweetheart, PrawnEatsPrawn! LOL. You want my SSN and mother's maiden name, too?

Bank account is attached and adding CC isn't an option for me.

Strange thing is, I used paypal for some items on thinkgeek.com yesterday (after encountering chess.com payment problems) and that went through swimmingly. Went swimmingly a few days before that on Amazon, too.

I'll ask customer service on PayPal's side what the deal is sometime today, I guess. Most sensible course of action from here on.

I had the same issue, I just gave up on getting a membership, it would be nice if you guys resolved the issue.

Its an issue for the site too since you are losing out on memberships; you guys should complain also.

Hello LottoHSV and Awesomedrifter, please see the personal message I have sent you regarding this matter.

Can I pay 20$ to Chess.com as gold membership fee for year? My Bank in Bangladesh is Standard Chartered Bank and I have a Credit Card only use for Bangladesh. How can I sent money to Chess.com. I contact both financial institute and both agree their limitation but my friend MikeDoyel, give your site to contact. Thanks sweet heart.
