Is there a way to refund membership on this app. I used up my 2 day free trial and now it just charged 100$ to my account that I did not authorize it to do. Please help me, I am from South Africa and I can only App Store vouchers in America and now I don’t have much in my wallet because of this.

You had your 7 day free trial.  It is your responsibility to cancel.  Its not chess.com;s job to remind you.

The refund policy allows me to refund this though.

Further to fluffylukeyboy above and contrary to IMBacon: I had the same experience where i have been charged for a 7-day trial even though I did not authorise it. The trial very clearly claimed 'We will not use your card unless you authoriize us to', and there was no such request, nor means to get in touch with chess.com to notify them whether to cancel, and nor do they respond for requests for refunds. The ethical way is to ask people after a trial whether they wish to continue, not break a promise. How is this different from theft? I will be reporting this as fraud to my bank. Chess.com casual members beware: do NOT give chess.com your credit card details!

The mechanism used by the site is the exact same as trial subscriptions utilized by pretty much every company that provides free trials. The current wording is a little ambiguous but I have never seen a trial that didn't have the requirement to cancel before the trial is over to not get charged.

IMNConsisitent responds:

Let me preface this  i have been contacted by chess.com who gave me a refund. Apparently part of the problem was the slow response rate. But in response to the above:

The current wording on he credit card page for the trial membership is "We'll only use this if you continue after your trial ends!"

If the current wording is a ‘little ambiguous’, as  Martin Stahl writes, then with respect, it seems to me that's not good enough. This is the critical page, where people choose to disclose their private details, and they do so in a relationship of trust with the provider. In particular, chess.com stands as the facilitator for a community, and so it should be unimpeachable in its trustworthiness. Any sentence which is employed on critical page will have been written and passed by the writer, and usually an ad agency, so it will have been passed by the legal department (I know, I used to help run one a big ad agency). So if the ambiguous wording is there, it is therefore a reason, and because it has been calculated that it encourages uptake. It does so by professing to be trustworthy, but in so doing instils in ambiguity: it implies that nothing will be done with the credit card, and that the user will instead have to take an active step before the details will be used. But in fact no step will need to be taken. I appreciate that the standard industry practice is to charge for a trial unless it is cancelled: but it is not standard practice to have this comment on the screen.

So, in my view, this sentence on the screen should be updated. I have sent a message to chess.com, in this regard, and I hope that their management will take notice. I appreciate also, however, that chess.com does provide an amazing platform, and also my experiences with its support staff have largely been positive and left me impressed. So certainly want to retract the tone of my initial complaint, before I had been contacted. Let me simply say that there is too much abuse of consumers by tech platforms, without accountability, and chess.com should not join those ranks. But aside from that, treat this as consumer feedback, and, chess.com, keep up the good work!

And due to a keyboard fandango, the above was posted un-proofread ("therefore" = there for) and unedited, so rather wordy. Apologies to all, but hopefully you get the gist.

Hi there. All first-time credit card subscriptions are given a 30-Day money-back guarantee, so assuming this transaction was within the last 30 days you should be able to get a refund easily.  If you have already contacted Member support I would suggest waiting a few more days. It can sometimes take a few days for the team to get back to you.

Good evening chess Team. I chose to buy the free version of the diamond member for 7 days. I knew I had to authorize payment if I wanted to continue after the 7 days of free trial, but it wasn't like that. And almost $ 80 was taken from the account. I need help please. I was a little shocked when I saw the message on the phone. Thank you..

The trial automatically charges if not cancelled before 7 days have elapsed. If you need a refund, you'll need to open a ticket with support:
