No, at this stage it will affect your rating.
Resigning tournament games affect rating?

I cant believe it. In the real world tournaments if you don't make a move its not a rated game. I'm on a 960 tournament that's taking FOREVER for round 2 to start. I finished the first 6 pretty quick and have waited way too long for the 2nd quad to start. So Ill get 6 losses on my rating even if I DONT MAKE A MOVE?? You wanna see this site lose paying members by the boat load?

I'm not a TD, but I believe that in USCF tournaments, once a round starts, a loss counts as a forfeit and affects your rating. You have to withdraw by telling the TD at the end of the last round that you are withdrawing, in which case they do not pair you. Once you are paired, it is too late to withdraw. In other words, if you fail to withdraw before the round starts, it does not matter if you make a move as white or not. Your opponent will start the clock, and if you don't make a move, then you forfeit. It's similar on chess.com except that the next round starts instantaneously when your current match completes. You may be able to withdraw from the tournament before your current game finishes and not forfeit the next game; I'm not sure whether you are allowed to finish your current game once you withdraw.

@MrDamonSmith I am under the impression if you quit a tournament in-between rounds you wont lose any rating points, apparently its only once the round has started that if you resign a game you will lose rating points

To clarify:
Online tournaments: You can withdraw from the tournament when you're waiting to the next round. Nothing is affected.
Live tournaments: The same story. But you need to withdraw, not just close the tab. In that case you will lose (only) next round's game.

Thanx. I'm thinking of withdrawing from the 960 tournament I'm in even though I really wanted to compete. It's just taking way too long for inconsequential games to finish. A computer program should be used to adjudicate them for pairing purposes. Its rediculous.

Good point. You're right.
That was a while back. I've had another beer since then.
But you ARE right. Its kind of stupid for me to even think about it in an angry manner.

As for FIDE tournaments, I have recently played in one and failed to arrive on time for one of the rounds. My opponent made his move and started my clock. After one hour forfeit was recorded and the game was not included in rating calculations. In swiss tournaments colour assignments in forfeit games do not affect subsequent pairings. Both players may be assigned same colours again because they did not actually play the game.
The FIDE rules state that only played games count for rating changes. When there is a forfeit it is just a point which affects tournament standings however ratings are not touched.
That would be strange if the rules were different on chess.com - ratings reflect relative strength of the players and it cannot be said one is stronger than another when they get a point without play

I think decrease in your rating while resigning or losing sucks. Is a tennisplayer losing points on the tour when he resigns of injury? Or a soccer team on competition when they lose? or in any other sports? I think rating should not change on one game but on a season or half season like in any other sports. Also depending on how many games you play. Also in tournements things are not going fair. Many times i play tournements below 1200 in which i meet opponents who are far above that. Also i noticed that many players increase a lot in one day, so they must cheat. I think organisers of a tournement should look at this more carefully, coz i have had it with rating.

I got into a 960 round somehow. I have never played or even seen a game like that. I didn't want to play it, but I couldn't seem to find a way out. My opponent had the first move and moved, so now I'm in the game. I didn't know what to do. So some said to just resign, so I did and they dropped my rating 121 points. Plus it will effect my team. I'm sorry to the team cuz I didn't realize that was going to happen. I guess it's a learning curve. But to make it worse. I was playing two different games with the same person and when I resigned the 960 game, it resigned the other game I wanted to finish playing and left me still with the 960 game. So, I guess I have to play it, cuz I don't want my team to lose another point. I don't know why it deleted the other game instead, I don't think that was right or fair, but oh well! :-)
Hi I have just got through to second round in chess.com under 2000 tournament and I dont really want the extra six games, if I resign will it effect my rating? in some of the games it is my turn first and I have not moved yet but in some others my oponnent has made there first move, I was under the impression that if less than 3 moves had been played it will not effect my rating if I resign is this true? thankyou for your response
