Here is the note received: "This website has been reported as unsafe

You sure that isn't the worm? If it keeps popping up, than it's a worm. I would sudgest starting up your firewalll; if you don't have one, get one now, right now. It should catch something, and delete it; and poof, it's gone.

I haven't gotten that, in case that's what you were looking for.

v4v4s

I have McAfee running. It managed to mess it up. So my second option was to restore to points way back. That worked. Did you get an invitation to "premier" group tournament? If you did, I am curious to know if you got this message, and if you had problem opening the invitation.

Thanks for your response.

shadowslayer

For most group tourniments, I don't bother to join; I just never like doing them.

Do you still have the message? Because that's something that chess.com should know about, sending worms is not a good thing. Even if you did delete it, you should tell chess.com about it anyway; somethimes sites keep backups of messages, even if it's just who sent what.

I'm just happy I could help.

v4v4s

I copied the message and its printed above word for word. Perhaps It is prudent not to join group tournament.. cause that's when I got the message.

shadowslayer

It claims it's from Microsoft, yet it came through the "unsafe site".

Was that all inside of the message? Because most of them ask you do download something, or pay for something else; I recently had gotten something like that, but it told me to pay for some software that would make it go away.

Once again, who sent the message; how else can you stop it if you don't know who it's from.

v4v4s

I dont know where it came from. There is a line for "more info". I did not click it cause the message made me uneasy. It could be from anywhere.

Zugzeit

Was this one of those red pages that are in-between in chrome and firefox? I believe THOSE are legit, but about this one, it probably IS a worm, and try AVG over McAfee, its free, and its a lot better.

v4v4s

No it was not. It appeared when I clicked that "premier group tournament". And when I ran McAfee it did not find any virus. So I don't know what's it's angling for. Perhaps its one of those that would say you have a virus and ask you to buy their product.

I'll look into AVG. Thanks

shadowslayer

A worm is not a virus, you need to understand that. A virus is something that you download, a worm is something that just pops into your computer. You can look into finding out exactly how it had gotten in, but it's very complicated (checking the ports is NOT easy).

v4v4s

Thanks. I have been lumping both as virus. But you are right... must be a worm. Once in awhile I have been getting it when visiting chess.com. That was the reason I have McAfree installed. Thanks for the info.

You better be joking, because that is nothing to kid about. Ruined computers is something that no one should have to go through.

No kidding.  This is tantamount to starving babies in Sudan or pederasty in Thailand.

I have to admit it slowed my computer down too. I have a high speed dual core engine but now feels like an old pentium.

This site has no virus or trojans.

Only culprit might be one of the the flash ads (note only free members affected)!

i love mac os x... I've never, not once in 5 years since switching over from windows had a worm or a virus and I've never used any security other than what comes with the osx.

v4v4s

I am sold on Mac too but too stingy to switch. I invested too much on pc both hardware & software to switch. Perhaps someday Apple might get the bright idea to offer a trade... a good marketing scheme I think. Just imagine the millions of pc owners like me. Apple wont be able to produce enough Macs to satisfy the demand. Lol

Yeah that's a good idea about the "trade in". I bet they'd make a killing.  I think it funny how people think that pcs are so much cheaper.  It's true you can get a junky laptop or desktop for less than most apples products, but apple doesn't make any junk.  So, you have to start by comparing the prices of macs to mid range to high end pcs. Then, once you add in for all of the security that you're going to have to spend money on over the life time of the pc things level out very quickly.

My mother has been raving about her Macbook.  Maybe I need to look into that too.
