take backs

Is there any way to enable "take back"s for online games?  I can't find that option on my iphone, and made an honest mistake trying to move and have conversation with colleague at work.  Ugh.

This is real chess we are playing here.  What would you do if you shanked your number 7 iron shot ? Say to your opponent "oops I didn't mean to do that, can I try again?"

I too feel that would be a nice feature... since sometimes the mistaken move is purely a technical glitch, e.g. the mouse sticking and dropping the piece to an obviously wrong square for a ridiculous move. The opponent could have the option of being generous and allowing a "do over" if requested immediately (within a set time, say 3 or 5 seconds). Especially if a fun game is underway.

On other sites, I have seen where people have abused take backs and requested 5 or 6 take backs in a game.  Not a feature I would like.

No takebacks in a rated game, ever. If you make mouse slips then buy a new mouse.

Take backs are allowed in "online" correspondence/daily games.

Can I take back a bad move?

You can... but only if you're playing a "Takeback" game in Online Chess!  (There are no take-backs in Live Chess.)

Takeback games are always unrated, and provide a great tool for learners and for those willing to act as guides.  Here's how to set one up:

Create a takeback game

On the Create New Game page, select "game options I select" to see the options underneath.

Then, on the drop-list that says "This is a rated game," click and choose "This is a takeback game" instead (see image above).  Proceed to create your game as always.

In a Takeback game, a special "Takeback" control appears under the Chat box & Move list.

Takeback button - only for takeback games!

Either player can click "Takeback" at any time:

  • When it is your move, clicking "takeback" undoes your opponent's previous move; it is their turn again. (Use the chat feature to tell your opponent why you think they should try something different.)
  • When it not your move, clicking "takeback" will undo your previous move; it is now your turn again.
