Tracking friends - function?

I´m fairly new here, so please excuse my ignorance! ;)

I´m looking for some way of finding out what my chess.com friends are doing at any one moment. I play an online game with someone, we chat, add each other as friends and agree to play again soon, but I´ve not found any way of finding out what he / she´s doing the next time I´m online. I send a challenge, but don´t know if they´re here, or if they´ve maybe just started a 60-min game or a tournament.

I tried the "track" function, but can´t make out what it shows you. Looking for information about "track" under the Search function only leads to a member with that name.

What I´m missing is simple information about a friend´s present activity when I go to his profile, so that I can maybe follow his game and send a challenge when he´s about to finish. Most of my new friendships have stagnated pretty rapidly, for the simple reason that it seems hard to keep track of one another on this site without using a diary and making appointments to play!

Am I missing any functions anywhere on the site? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: this is getting really frustrating - while I was writing the above, a friend accepted my challenge, but I had no way of knowing this. Programmers - shouldn´t it possible to have a message flashed, wherever a member happen to be on the site, when he sends a challenge / when one is accepted?

Welcome to the site :) I think you might be looking for our status light. When you go to someones profile or even look at your friends list, if you see a green or orange square at the bottom right corner of their avatar, they're online right now.  If the square is green it means that they're on the website at the moment.  If the square is orange it means that they're on live chess at the moment.

If you receive a challenge and you're on live chess you'll get a notification. If you're on the site and you receive an online chess challenge, you'll see a notification show up in your sidebar. You'll also receive a notification that its your turn, or if someone sent you a message, etc.

When you track a friend, it shows you forum posts, blogs, photo albums, etc. they started.

Most of the people who I "know" on the site I either talk to a lot in group notes/forums, or I play a long time control game (1-14 days per move) and chat in game chat with them.

Thanks to you both, that´s a great help!

jac1yn - I tend to browse a lot in the forum between games. Would it be possible to receive notification of challenges / acceptance of challenges while I´m here?
